Don't we have the same derale cooler? I still have my fan on a toggle switch and kick it on at like 150. For me the cooler itself isn't enough but it works for now.
I am still interested in what the best trans coolers are. i have a 700r4 and it pretty much matches my engine temps even with the additional external cooler with a fan on it.. it sits at 190-220 pretty much all the time. i was thinking of adding one more external cooler with a fan just to see if i could keep it under 200. that would give me my radiator and 2 coolers with fans. (sorry to go back two pages on comments) also wondering if not running the trans through the radiator at all would help my engine temps at all?

From what I have heard and been told, get the biggest one you can fit.

You want to run the transmission fluid through the radiator cooler so the transmission fluid warms up properly, otherwise you'll damage the transmission not allowing it to operate at the minimum 175. I don't see the connection you see between engine temps and transmission temps however my engine has never been over 196. Cruising around or locked in 4LO they're both at 185.

You need to go in the radiator to burn off moisture in the ATF.
I bypassed it in my wagoneer a few years ago and after a while it started acting up and I asked my friend who is a transmission builder and he told me to hook it back up.

more pics from the Rubicon, these ones Pat took. Professional photographers sure know how to capture the trail better!

I run the biggest B&M stacked plate cooler with a fan and I think it works great.

I don't know about that 175 number. Most of the time the 4l80e doesn't hit that. The 700r4 I had for a decade only ran about 165 a majority of the time. I've also noticed the trans in my 08 2500HD often doesn't even reach 165 and it's all factory.

I don't think I would ever go by numbers on a factory temp gauge. Nevertheless you can read it here and numerous other resources http://www.tciauto.com/tc/trans-life-expectancy
The ideal operating temperature for automatic transmission fluid is between 175 and 225° F
