'84 K5 Build (Midlife Crisis)

Little more progress but not much. So my wheel bearing nut is 50/50’d on the keyway at the bearing tension I want. One back and it’s loose. Tighten to the next and it’s too much preload. I think I might get the stage 8’s I have on the 60. They lock down anywhere you want.

Well, no dice on the stage 8’s. They only fit 14 bolts
With an inner hub diameter over 3+ inches. This suckers only 2.8. Guess I’ll have to fiddle with trying the other nut and or flipping it over. Maybe find a sweet spot.

Weld it in place? :dunno:

Seriously, the nut is a different thread size than older axles?

I think it’s the same thread. Just some 14 bff have enough room in the hub for the stage 8 and some don’t?

What about the older style with 2 nuts and a cage washer?

I am not positive about the inner dimension of the hub on my '95, but I ended up buying the older 3 piece spindle nut for it when I found the same problem. I wondered if I was over analyzing things, but I was having to replace an axle seal, just as you are, so there most likely is a contributing element with improper preload setting. Mine has been trouble-free for 3 years so far, even after having 3800lbs in the bed a couple of times.

Weren't some of those double nutted? So you could still flip over that and use the 2nd nut to lock it in..? I have old brain and could be thinking of something else...

The older ones were. This is the ‘99 up AAM 14 bff
It just has the one nut, keyway, and spiral keeper.

It's super exciting to see a good friend I've had for 30+ years have a nationwide magazine along with ORD feature his hard work. Well deserved brother! When it's in print we're going to do a layout for printing it in poster size along with a cool frame for the garage. I can't wait, this is pretty awesome.

@AgDieseler this is how close mine is. That’s with a 3/32” washer between the heim and the axle mount. Also the bolt I removed. Someday I will counter sink an allen bolt back in there flush lol.
