'84 K5 Build (Midlife Crisis)

Got my spanglish mixed up. delete

When you want to get all the oil out of the pan but your driveway is sloped so you jack it up. Then it’s heavy to the passenger side but you need it to lean left haha. :)

Is your rear tire carrier the diy 4x4? give you a nice step to get in back when lowered? Just curious if you ever wish you had a swinging one.

im trying to plan out a rear tube bumper and just trying to collect some inputs.

If you go to the top of the thread, there’s a link for build threads with a “tire carrier”

No I built it from scratch. All tubing and an equipment trailer ramp spring. Yes it makes a great step to get in for sure. A swing out would definitely be easier to open and close, but I’m to old and lazy to try and swap out a 40” four feet in the air.

So I added a springy thingy contraption to help lift the 134lb. tire up. I had two springs on it and It was to much. Took one off and it’s ok. We’ll see how it goes. I have to come up with a way to lock it in the down position so when I need to remove the tire it doesn’t spring up and break my jaw!

Did you ever come up with a bottom latch for this, so it doesn't spring up when you take it off?

Yes I did come up with something. It’s not actually a latch, but rather a piece of flat plate with a notch that keys into one of the pull pin things. Works really well.

Does it also hold it to keep from hitting the ground? So you could possibly drive some with the tire in the down position? CASEY7 made one or bought it with it already but his seems to only hold tire up. i bet it bounces if you tried to drive much. here is a link to his. He has some bars on the sides, i kind of like the idea possibly having just one bar to utilize as a handle like on the new trucks tailgates with steps, they have that pop up handle.

I do a lot of public land hunting and out of state, I like to camp.

Do you ever wish you had a offroad trailer for some bigger or more comfortable, easier camping? Or even a little reciever hitch flat tray thing. For Like when you have your kids or friends you can haul whatever extra gear they or you might need. Your minimalist setup is pretty slick though.

Ed's K5 is far from minimalist. He camps quite well with his setup and the tire carrier is one small piece to the overall rig. He hauls more gear than I do with my pop up camper lol. (well organized packaging vs my throw sh!t in boxes and roll)

Mine will rest on the ground in most cases when I stand on it. If I am parked on the top of a hill, or the ground is dug out, it will stop mechanically. The spring will hold it off the ground about a foot when you first let it down.
I personally have no need to drive with it in the down position, but you could build one to do whatever you want it to. A deer hauler position would be cool, but you would have to be careful about the huge low overhang. You would lose all departure angle if you were in the hills.
I don’t even have a receiver hitch on this so no plans to tow anything especially with the coil overs now. I have used my buddies little overland tow camper with my Jeep and it’s pretty damn cozy, way better than sleeping in the blazer. I actually just bought an enclosure for my ez-up so I can have a little 10x10 cabin with my cozy cot and room to move around. I’m getting to old and fat to be comfortable in the small space of the K5.
You are on the right track for building something really functional. Keep looking at everyone’s pics and asking pros and cons. Write down your notes and make sketches. That’s the best part about building it yourself. You can make whatever you desire.

I do get a lot of crap in there huh:D
Be even more gear next weekend. I just got a truckload of mesquite for firewood yesterday :waytogo:

You hit the nail on the head with a deer hauler position, thats what I’m trying to account for.

It would be hard to build a swing out that could support a big spare, plus a cooler full of ice and meat I would imagine. Or like you say not ruin departure angle with just a deer thrown over tire for when im just by myself or whatever.

Thank you for your Input, I still got plenty of time to think it over, but I am definitely taking notes.
