'84 K5 Build (Midlife Crisis)

Trans is test fitted. Gotta fine tune the shifter opening a little bit.

I could be wrong but the old transmission bellhousings were not a full circle and the bottom cover was kind of completing the circle but not quite connected, so the rods made it a more stiff connection.
This bellhousing is a full circle and strong enough not to need a brace.

Those 'site glasses' protected when up in the truck?
Yessir. It’s all protected by a giant skidplate. There is just the one sight tube. The other piece of hose is just temporarily on the vent fitting to keep dirt out until it’s installed and connected to its real vent hose.

Yeah, on the automatic’s they’re like that.
The manuals are full circle.

Fastereddie,

I was hoping you could answer a few questions about your K5. I had a number of images of your K5 saved and wanted to adopt some things you’re doing.

Mine is a 1986 K5. Previous owner did all of the work. 454, SM465, 208 case, 14bolt rear, 10 bolt front with Reid Racing knuckles, cross over and high steering, 5:13s, 39.5 Tires, 6” lift with 3 or 4” body (I believe).

I want to install a 205 with the magnum underdrive. Is there a certain 205 that’d work best? Left hand drop, right hand drop, etc?

I’m wondering before you swapped to a 4500 what your top speed was? I can’t get more than 55-60.

What made you choose the coils vs. springs? My current suspension is worn out, bushings are shot, cracked leaf, etc. I’d like something that rides a little better. I wasn’t sure the benefits of coil vs springs. I know coils cost allot more and I’d imagine ride better. Mine feels too top heavy. I’d like to trim fenders more and get the tires to tuck in better.

I won’t be doing anything nearly as extreme as you. I’m building this so I can enjoy the outdoors with my kids. The magnum probably isn’t necessary but I’d rather have it & not need it, than need it & not have it. We won’t be building a pavement princess but we won’t be off road all of the time either. We live in ND so rocks are only in a small portion of the state. We’d see more mud and easy trails.

Thanks for any advice in advance!

Hey thanks, I’ll try and answer best I can.
As far as driver or passenger drop goes, that just needs to match your front axle.
ORD makes a magnum for either type of 205, but if you have the older figure 8 style, you need to have the case machined for the larger 90mm input bearing.
I’m running 4:56 gears with the 40’s so I was able to do 80 down the highway but was at about 3k rpm.
I had badass alcan leaf springs before I went fourlink. I just got tired of tearing up bushings and lack of axle control in the front with all the unsprung weight.
If your not doing faster desert stuff, you’d probably be happy with good leaf springs.

Thanks a ton. I think I’ll chage gearing when I install the 1 ton axle up front. 5:13s are painfully low. If you’re willing I might have questions on your rear bumper set up when we get to it.

You bet.

Between me being under the weather and the actual weather, I’ve managed to get the trans mount finished, the magnum mount ready to weld to the x-member, the triple stick cables replaced and new spark plug wires built and installed. Basically down to drive shafts and exhaust I think.
