'84 K5 Build (Midlife Crisis)

Got it back together to measure again. Had 1/16” of breathing room so I milled another 1/16” off the hub to give me an 1/8”. Stabbed the transmission, connected the clutch hose and bled it with the help of my daughters. Had them push the clutch pedal and wha-LA, it releases and I can spin the output shaft on the trans freely.
I think I should be good to go to put the rest of the truck back together.

Still have no explanation of why there was interference.

If anyone has a 2pc. rear main sbc laying around, I would love to know the measurement from the back of the block to the back of the crankshaft surface where the flywheel mates. Mine measured 5/8”.

Strange one to sort out bro...glad you got it.

Looked at a 72 LT-1 SBC and it’s at 5/8” dimension as well.
Also checked a few old 292 6cyl engines and they all are at 5/8”.

Only things that I can think of is either the T.O.B. collar was a bit too long, something is goofy with the first disc or ya’ could have major wear on your crankshaft thrust bearing ???

Edit: On second thought I guess the crankshaft play could not be to blame in this case because when the clutch is depressed it moves the other way which would give you more clearance and not cause your original problem.

Thank you for that. I was pretty sure mine was good because it worked with 2 other transmissions. I’m leaning towards the new disc as being the issue. I think was either assembled wrong or not the correct application. Maybe mis boxed? I checked my thrust clearance when I had the flywheel off and it was .006, but yeah excessive play would of helped.

Hopefully you got it all figured out now. I'll bet you'll be glad to drive it again and put this behind you.

Right on! Bet it feels like a whole new truck with that trans in it. Great work getting through the odd stuff too.

Thanks Rob, it is quite different feeling.
Gear spread is much better. So far I’m liking the taller 5.61 first gear. Works good with my tire/gearing combo. Shifting is nice. I can row through all the gears without moving my shoulder basically.
Everything feels and sounds good so far. Now I just hope it stays that way!

Next project will be the rear half of the exhaust. I really want to see if I can snake the 3” around the fourlink somehow…

I did some measuring today after work, and I can’t seem to fit 3” exhaust up around the rear four link. Looks like I’m going to keep the belly dump. I did order a bigger magnaflow to replace the small kooks I have on it now. It’s just too loud and droney. I prefer my flowmasters but it just doesn’t fit well.

I love it when summit has my parts in the Nevada warehouse. I ordered that muffler yesterday and it was here today.

I still wish it was a chambered muffler, but it is noticeably better sounding than the smaller Kooks I had.
