84 K5: The Buzzard

The plan is to freshen up one of the 350's I have at the house, trying to get 300hp out of it. Fluid/filter change in the 700R4 with a possible Trans-Go kit for good measure. After I get it running again and the body patched up, I'll start on the suspension.

Do these use the 1310 or 1330 series U-Joints in the drive shafts?

I'm wanting to paint the grill/headlight trim black. I've got the paint and it's more or less a free thing I can do to the truck while it's still on the trailer at the moment.

The P/O just painted over the grill and the turn signals have quite a bit of paint on them. I know I can use acetone or paint thinner to remove the paint from the headlights, but I need suggestions for getting it off the turn signals with out fogging them up or damaging the plastic.

Explain this to me!

We moved the Blazer down to my friends house today where we're going to be working on it. Went to start it and it tried to start a few times, but wouldn't stay lit.

We pulled the #1 plug wire off and grounded it to the exhaust manifold to check for spark. While it was there, the motor tried to start. Put the wire back on and nothing, grounded it again and it started, but died again when I put it in gear. Put the wire back on, nothing. Grounded it again, it started and we loaded it on (at least 2 dead cylinders, motors bad anyways). Once it warmed up some, we put the wire back on and it's started good ever since.

Anyways, got the 12b painted and prepped to go in. Got to refill it with oil and bend a couple brake lines for it. They both were seized tight in the fittings, so I just cut them to save time. Plan is to get it installed next weekend and start tearing down the 10b.

I got the 12b swapped in tonight. Bent up new brake lines and put on new brake hardware (just because I was there and changed the e-brake cables).

We were looking at it and it seems that someone has put a Rancho budget boost on it. The front leaf pack as 3 leaves instead of 2 like the K15 springs I have. There are blocks in the rear and Rancho RS5000's all the way around. I'm going to run it like that until I get the new axles built and ready for the 52/56 swap.

I'm looking for a 10b gov-lock to swap in the front before I get the 10b installed (next weekend hopefully). I've wanted to run gov-locks front and rear for a while and see if I can make them work. Having a little trouble getting my hands on one for a reasonable price.

Other than that, I just need either a 3R or 1330 yoke for my 12b to get the drive shaft hooked up. Anyone have one they'd part with? Will the 10b yoke fit the 12b?

10b yoke does fit the 12b. Just use the factory 10b seal and 12b pinion nut. Works fine.

I've searched and found threads about putting bench seats in these, but cannot find what you need to do to put a truck bench in? I've got a decent folding truck bench I'd like to run for the extra seating. How'd you guys do it?

My 700r4 went over 100k in stock form, and it had a hard life too! My K5 was lifted with less then 200 miles on it (2 days old), 3.73's with 38's on it then later went to 39" MT baja's and 5.13's. It was then built the early 90's, held up great to all the abuse I gave it, so nwo it will get freashen up with some new and better stuff before it goes back in.

UPS was nice enough to drop some stuff by this week!

The TorkerII intake is for my Camaro. I'm going to pull the Weind Action+ from it and put it on the K5. Taking the pistons and rods to the shop tomorrow to get them put together and a guy I work with is going to let me use his cam bearing installer. Hopefully I can get the front axle in this weekend and get the engine built next weekend. So far so good!

You have a slightly better 700 than I do. I think I have solved this problem though. As soon as the weather gets a little better, a fella has offered me two more Camaros in trade for a S-10 I have setup for a V8. One is a 92 model that my Dad want to put the manual transmission driveline out of one of his parts cars in and make a toy. That means I get the 700R4 in it to build for my Blazer.

Thats good, but you really need to get one that has a K case to build. Maybe you can trade that one for one. K case is stronger, they have a big K on them, they also have cast bellhouse cover not a tin one. I think they only come in trucks

Well, so far so good. I'm still basically on schedule with what I want to get done before spring. The front 10b is more or less under the truck. I've got to tighten one shock bolt, hook the drive shaft back up, and do something about the brakes.

I didn't know they changed the calipers between 79 and 84. I've got to change the brake hoses to the earlier ones, swap backing plates or grind the nub off the bottom of the 84 calipers.

Took the rods and pistons to the shop this morning to have them pressed on. Should be done by Monday is what they told me. I'm off Monday so that works good. I need to get the block out, maybe Monday, and drill a few holes in it and do some cleanup work so it'll be ready to reassemble next weekend.

I know there are no pictures so far, but I don't think anyone wants to see a 10b/10b set getting swapped out for a 10b/12b. I'll be taking pictures of the engine as I build and install it since that will be a noticeable change.

Oh yeah, left something out:

The 305 is BAD bad bad. It's been pretty cold and windy all week (or several weeks) here. We tried to start it last night to move it inside. When I started cranking it, there was apparently a rather large ice cube in one of the cylinders that slammed into the head and stopped the starter cold. :D It made me smile.

EDIT: Julie and Alex went down and helped me finish up the front axle this morning. Once we got it back on it's tires we tried to start it. It gushed about a gallon of water out the tail pipe and refused to start. Fun fun!

While I was selling some parts to a guy Julie took out the grill and her and Alex painted it for me. I like it alot better like this:

And my little helper's at it again!

n/m. Found the RPO sheet for the GMC and it says 3.40 gear ratios.

ugh. Still have not gotten the engine done due to me being sick yesterday and Julie being sick today. Maybe tomorrow.

To do list:
FINISH ENGINE!!! priority #1
Install engine
change trans/t-case fluid
clock t-case (?)
swap rear carrier and install mini-spool
build sliders
find 88-98 bench seat for less than $200 and install.

Stuck the Boggers on today!

And the front wheels hit the tie rods. Gonna have to mount them on the old steel truck wheels I was planning to run in the first place. These wheels are from an Xterra so I wan't expecting them to fit great. Anyways, here's an idea of how it'll look at least! I'm tickled with it and a little more motivated to finish the engine for it!

Got the engine finished yesterday. Gotta get a distributor for it and swap the accessories off the 305 after we pull it, but it should be good to go!

Swapped the Boggers onto the stock wheels I have and even managed to get the spare in the factory location.

Try to get some better pictures in the daylight before I head back to work tomorrow. I'm pleased with the look/stance of the truck, can't wait to get it together and wheel it some!
