84 K5: The Buzzard

That's not bad. How about clearance? I'm only on about 2" of lift and not sure I'll be going any higher if I can get the t-case clocked flat without much aggravation. Anyone have any pictures of them installed from underneath? I may wind up running stock manifolds for now, just to save time/cost of getting a new y-pipe made.

After a few days searching, I still have not found the correct sensor for that mystery plug. Advance just offers one with two blade terminals. The plug has 3 wires, looks like two blades on the outside and a pin between them. Guess I'll have to go to GM and see what they have.

After a few weeks of having the motor in and not having the time or getting pulled off for different projects/trips, WE FINALLY STARTED IT TODAY! Gotta rig up an exhaust system for it next weekend and the distributor is about a tooth too far retarted and the base is a little off, but we got it started and broken in with no major faults! Need to swap power steering line and rig up some plug wire looms.

Next on the list of Things To Do:
Build "Ultimate Q-Jet"
Get timing right
Build exhaust system
Clock T-Case
Build Sliders
Swap in open carrier and mini-spool

So Mitch came over Friday and we drug this thing over to the carport and started working on it. It's been a while since I've had the time to do anything with it, but it's driving me nuts sitting there looking all pathetic.

We did everything shy of putting a vent in one of the vacuum lines and I still can't get under 44* total timing. I pulled the adjustable advance off it and compared it to another one I have. You just can't set the advance tight enough to overcome the amount of vacuum the engine has! Oh well, drove it up to the corner, no spark knock, no other issues with it that I noticed!

Going to try to come up with some kind of power steering hose that'll work with the manifolds and PS pump I have, try to get exhaust on it, and maybe even clean up the floor and get the seats bolted back down this weekend.

Put in a new gauge cluster today. All the gauges work now. Also hit the passenger side floor board with a brush wheel and sprayed it with Dupli-color Spray on bed liner. Anyone used that before? Seems to do ok, guess we'll try it.

Also got the passenger seat back in and it's seat belts mounted again. Gotta get the driver's side done next weekend and maybe finish stripping the cargo area.

do you have an adjustable vacuum advance canister? really is worth the 30 bucks to get the timing dialed in well.

I had a edelbrock performer cam in a stockish 350 with TBI heads and it it like about 15* base and got it to about 35* total at about 2500-3000 rpm, had a high rise dual plane intake and a 600 edelbrock and it ran like a scalded dog

Oh he has a couple, and tried them both. This motor could suck a golf ball through a garden hose.

Yeah, I had a spare one in the tool box. We compared it to the one that's on there and the one on there was stronger.

Got the interior paint finished today. It's not great, just some Dupli-color spray in bed coating. Better than nothing. Got a few holes to patch up and figure something out on the rear of the bed floor. Ordered a power steering hose this evening, gonna see if it'll work tomorrow and with any luck get the exhaust on it. Hope to be driving and wheeling this thing in a few weeks!

Well, got the exhaust done on it this evening and did a few other small projects on the interior. Should be up and going as soon as I find a power steering pressure hose that will fit. Finally getting some stuff done!!!

Ok, so on with some pictures!!!

First a glimpse of the interior. Had a few more shots but the didn't make it off the camera for some reason...

And the exterior as it sits now:

And a little fun today after we got the power steering hooked up!!!

We went up the road to try a steeper section, but don't have the approach angle for it. Tried to come at it at an angle, and got so twisted up the top of the cab actually popped (sheet metal bent) and it teetered on two wheels. SWEET!!!!

And some added sweetness! A Marlboro Coleman cooler that was in the Blazer, and totally fits the mullet wearing flaming Redneck theme I'm going for here! lol

slide the lid to the back of the cooler and close it again, and you've got a drink holder!

Dude you have to weld up a cooler rack that goes into the receiver hitch. O with a bottle opener on it.

I like the sh*t out of this. Its got poor boy giver-hell redneck all over it!

You need a giterdone sticker on the front and a fear this one the back!

Here's a few pics of the plug. I was mistaken, the wires are two blue wires and one pink/red?

And a shot of the new engine installed. Look over the wing bolts on the valve covers, I couldn't find the factory bolts and had those laying around from several years ago.

that plug went to the oil pressure sender. The blue wire is connected in to operate an electric choke when the engine warms up.

that plug went to the oil pressure sender. The blue wire is connected in to operate an electric choke when the engine warms up.

All three of those wires are on a single plug. The switch that's in there now doesn't have a connection for the center wire and my oil pressure gauge reads fine now that I've replaced the gauges with ones that are not rusted in place.

The 2 blue wires are hooked together inside the plug. The other wire is actually a pink/white wire according to my diagram. The oil press. gauge sending was is it's own plug. That plug is just for the electric choke.

Strange.... My electric choke works fine, but it is plugged into a switch right now, but that pink/white wire has no connection on that switch. Can you scan me a copy of that diagram so I can trace it?

Got it tagged last weekend but didn't have time to do much with it. Had a family function in WV to attend and just drove to work from there.

Finally got to play with it some today while helping Julie change transmission fluid on her Camaro. I managed to get a battery hold down on it by drilling the weld-nut out and putting a bolt through it. Battery won't wind up in the fan this way.

Spent about an hour looking for Q-Jet parts to build a good canadate for a future "Ultimate Quadrajet" build. I used the bowl and top from the carb we had on the K5 to get it started and the base from the original 305 from the K5. The K5 was apparently considered more of a passenger vehicle than a truck because it used the car base plate instead of the truck.

I put the 305 tune (metering rods/rod holders/springs) in the new carb. Runs good, a little lean in the secondaries, but I expected that. Going to change transmission fluid on it tomorrow and possibly put in the mini-spool if I have time. Also hope to get some wheeling in tomorrow. Helped my buddy get his F-150 going again this evening and he's got a new spot on his land he wants to go play on.
