Thanks man. Going to try to get the mini-spool in and maybe even the interior stripped this weekend and put the engine in next weekend. If nothing explodes or otherwise needs fixing on the other vehicles before then.

Managed to get the 305 to fire today and hauled it over to my Mom and Dad's where my tools are. Going to try to get the new engine swapped in it next weekend.

Flexed it out on the bank after we unloaded it to see how well it worked. Not bad considering I have not done anything to it yet but a locker in the front and changed axles!

Got the engine set down in the truck today. Layed the wiring harness down across the engine to start finding where things go and have a mystery plug. It goes down the drivers side of the block to just above the oil filter. There wasn't anything there on the engine we took out but it looks like the engine has been swapped before. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what went there?

pic of plug? Driuver's side stuff I can think of would be temp sender, or knock sensor

It has two wires going down, light and dark green I think (been a couple of hours and I'm pretty tired). Large round black plug that looks like it would go onto two male spade terminals. I'll try to get a picture of it tomorrow. I've found the knock sensor wire, oil pressure sending unit wire, temp wire and it's not any of them.

look like this type of plug

I would have to look at mine I think the green wires are for the A/C, plug doesn't sound right but should have wires going to the ac compressor on the driver side.

It does look similar to that plug, but that plug is in the HVAC harness and is not part of the main harness that comes from the bulk head connector on the drivers side like the one I'm trying to figure out. I'll try to get a picture of it before we leave town today.

Barring any major developments or failures elsewhere, I should have the K5 drivable next weekend. Shouldn't take but a couple hours to get everything back on and rebuild the Q-Jet. Looks like I got a pretty good deal in this old thing. It's got a new water pump, belts, hoses, and radiator.

Here's a few pics of the plug. I was mistaken, the wires are two blue wires and one pink/red?

And a shot of the new engine installed. Look over the wing bolts on the valve covers, I couldn't find the factory bolts and had those laying around from several years ago.

That kinda looks like a glow plug controller plug to me...:dunno:

this is for low oil pressure switch
it is either located beside the distributor
or right above the oil filter

in out cars we have two oil related sensors

oil pressure sender ( usually one wire )
sends signal to the oil pressure gauge

low oil pressure switch
sends signal to oil light in the dash

GMC500, what does the switch do? I don't have any warning lights or anything turned on on the dash board and the 305 would start and run.

it will let the oil light go on if there is no oil pressure
I've disconnected mine too since 2 years and it is running fine

Alright, I may try to find the proper switch and put it in anyways. Does anyone make a budget set of shorty headers for these trucks? All I can find online cheap is long tubes and shorty is $200+. I thought a set of old Hooker "Hot Rod" headers I had would work, but they hit the drivers side motor mount.

$300!!! No way this engine is worth that. Stock cam, stock heads unported, stock 4bbl aluminum intake off a 82 Trans-AM. I'd consider giving $100-150 for a set of shorties, but long tubes are going to interfere with my travel on such small lift.
