'85 C30 now a K20 - Grandpa's Truck

test drive went awesome, hold each gear out to about 4300 at full throttle and the cruising shifts are perfect. no more early shifts. now its time to weld the rear, a line lock and some burnouts! and hit the local drag strip with some buddys for a good time.

we welded a buddys rear ead about two weekends ago in his ford 2wd f250/460 and while turning sharp sucks, you can do a mean burn out with it...

I welded up a rear end on my old pickup once. At the time i was glad i did it cause i had no money. A detroit locker wins hands down but if you dont really care and acknowledge that you will get sick of it one day, its kinda fun. I did get sick of it real quick tho and put a normal set of spiders back in it.

im 95 percent sure its going to get welded as soon as its back on the road for the summer. i have no problem finding spiders as i have access to a few dually 14FFs lying in a buddies back yard i can swap with. and i know a guy that works at one of the bigger junk yards around here and he has a nice big lunch pale that he usually doesnt have lunch in....haha either way id only be out a little time and just a few bucks if i decide to change them back. any manufactured traction device is out of the picture at the moment. Goal is to just do a few things on this truck to make it the way i want for the summer then dump the rest of my funds into my K20

rear is welded, noticeable but i can live with it for now, i'm still young and dumb :doah::haha:. hit the strip a while back. burnt a plug wire and was having a little hiccup with the holley i couldn't figure out. o well i was happy, first time i ever took anything down the strip. at least my carbs' problems were consistant lol ran 16.5 all day. actually ran a 16.57 then a 16.53, than another 16.53 all hot laps. not bad for a c30 with my $800 355, the 6.2 rad and my dual 13" fans worked awesome, never even thought about getting hot and my fan controller kept it right temp the whole day.

rebuilt a different holley and got it tuned right in now, woke this thing up and re-did my plug wire situation. i'm curious what it'll run now. i think i'll hit the strip one more time before i pull the motor out to put in my k20.

been collecting parts for the 383 build. guy at work gave me a new oil pump, bought a milodon 7quart pan and pick up off another co worker for 60 bucks. got the block all stripped and ready for machining. bought an old Wieand intake and a bunch of random chevy sbc stuff for 100 bucks.

heres some pics of the test and tune at the local track

Looks like fun. 16.50s ain't bad for an old 3/4 ton, small.block truck. Now its cool to have a baseline to see how much better the 383 will.be

brought a little chills to me pulling into the drag strip, this truck use to tow my uncles drags cars to this strip way back in the day. they'd borrow it from my grandpa...makes ya think about what the truck was like then and what its like now. went from tow duty to out on the strip. kinda crazy.

heres an oldy for ya, the original "goober's Garage" gang ( if you noticed from this and my other thread thats what they were know as and know thats what i go by) dad on the left, uncle randy, there buddy kernie, and my uncle mark with his mach 1. this was prolly late 70's, obliviously before they used my grandpa's truck...

edit: i take it hair like that was in "style" ? :doah::haha:

well drag racing is fun . and biggest thing is same repetable results time after time for bracket racing .

and you got that covered by the sounds of it.

also keeping it cool with electric fans and big rad helps a lot.

cant wait to drag my build 85 c10 2wd sb with 5.3 swap / 4l60e / 4.10 rear .

Been watching your build, looks like its going to be a fun one!

times flys when your havin fun....haven't updated in a while.

after some hard thinking and going over financial stuff and being "realistic" :doah:ive cut down my projects to building one truck..

my rolling chassis from my other thread is turning out so nice that it deserves a nice drive train and body. yup you know what that means. my red C30 is now my donor body for my K20 frame. it will be my summer toy and dune rig prolly wont get to dirty as i did pick up a good beater truck to play in the mud with, wait didnt i just say i was being realistic? haha yes it is a disease and ive cought it really bad.

aint it funny how plans change?

so in the end ill have a K20 chassis with 44/14ff, sporting my 355 (trw 30 over forged flat tops, my newly acquired comp 274h cam, and looking to pick up a set of world sportsman 2's by the end of this week) backed by a th350/203 combo that i plan on building as im taking trans class next. all this sitting under my red C30 body. goal is to have the chassis done, rolling and running by spring/summer, awaiting the red body. i think its doable

I'd go with a 208 unless you put a part time kit in the 203. I have a 208 collecting dust if you need one.

i do plan on putting a part time kit in the 203, but thanks i will definitely keep it in mind. from pinckney eh? know any Donovans? i dont really know them well but there our neighbors up north..jw
