85 K5 Build (What to do this summer...)

So I started the cage Saturday in total I used about 65 feet of 1 3/4 tube. I got the bender and notcher from a friend and used my harbor freight 180 amp welder. After a measuring error due to Fusion 360 we had to rebend the front hoop and had to tweak my designs. I still have a few things I am going to do before I paint it but just wanted to show the progress. I a going to spray it with rust oleum primer and black semi gloss. I have way more respect for roll cages now

I got busy this last week and didn't get a chance to update. I finished up a few things on the roll cage and made some shovel and axe mounts (Pictures to come) I am also going to paint it sometime this week. I went up to Big Bear Lake for the weekend to go offroading and after getting back Saturday I parked the truck in the garage. When I came back to the garage to load up the car there was 2 quarts of gear oil that had leaked out around the axle shaft. My buddy just had to be in the picture.

I drove it home then started tearing everything downIMG_7871.JPG IMG_7872.JPG IMG_7873.JPG IMG_7874.JPG

Cleaned up the diff cover to get it ready for some red paint. Then made a $200 autozone trip:frown1:

I got the hub spindle and axles removed and the inner seals back in last night

Looks good and in the future if you get into a bit more technical crawling or more extreme wheeling you could add an X brace in the B pillar and re design the brace bars on top to be a bit more structural, but either way a significant improvement over nothing.

Did you brace the bottom plates to the frame?

I am still thinking of adding a few braces before I paint. I put a plate on the bottom so its ready to tie into the frame but i'm worried about vibration

Use a fab bushing to isolate the mount.

anyone have thoughts on axle trusses?

Prolly really only necessary if you're planning on catching some air. @Deuling has his front trussed.

DIY4X Staked cage plates, with poly bushings mounted on the bottom, to kickers to the frame.

It works good. :D

.120 1.75

I figured, whats the point in going any thicker than the tubing you are welding to it...

good work so far! looks better then the crap I owned and was working on when I was a teenager.

Quick update I got the seals installed and all the new bearings decided why I was at it I should put a new steering arm on too. That was a 8 hour mistake
IMG_7884.JPG IMG_7887.JPG
Got the carrier back in (with new bearings and races of course)IMG_7888.JPG
I thought the arm would just slide off and I would order a new one:shame:IMG_7889.JPG
I had to use a arm to a puller and a piece of 1 inch tubing to get the little spindle bearings out
IMG_7890.JPG
I was pretty frustrated at this point
IMG_7892.JPG
Finally got them out and figured why not do ball joints

The new beauty

Nothing ever goes fast.

While you were in the diff, did you check for any slop in the pinion bearing?
