85 K5 Build (What to do this summer...)

Update on the Mastercraft Courser MXT's .... They are the best! I have only driven them on the road but they are silent and ride ridiculously smooth. My truck rides smoother than our 2012 Suburban and as nice as my mom Mercedes Benz CLK 350... Not lying at all.

Today the check engine light came on and I can't seem to get it into the "diagnostic mode" where it flashes codes. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The new tires worked great took them up so loose dirt hills and a couple creek crossings. They ride great too!

Check Engine light is back and wont go into diagnostic mode. The ecmb fuse isn't blow. Any help would be appreciated. This is my last weekend home before I leave for school and I need to get it fixed.

Have you got any driveability issues? Running rough? Hesitation? Mis-firing? What's going on besides the light being on?

Keep this in mind, TBI systems are very basic with being OBD1 won't set codes unless something is way out of line. Gotta go old school here and diagnose your symptoms if you got any if you can't flash codes out of the ECM. Don't overlook the basics. Plugs/wires/cap/rotor if it's an ignition miss. Running out of power under load? Check the fuel filter. Inconsistent idle quality? Check for carbon build up on the throttle body itself or on the IAC.

I could keep going but without symptoms I could go all over the place.

It's carbureted but it has the electronic controls. It runs perfect but I heard that it could be my oil pressure switch so I replace that and my distributer with a new msd unit and I still have a check engine light

Yikes..Computer Command Control Quadrajet. Now I see the location is California. It all makes sense.

That being said, you probably pulled out a ESC (electronic spark control) distributator for the MSD unit. While it probably works without the ESC dizzy, the ECM is probably looking for it.

For lack of any driveability issue I'd drive it with the light on. Had you not been in CA, I'd say disable the system to ditch the early computer controls. but you got to pass emissions and I'm sure they check the light works correctly during the test. If the lights on, no test, go fix.

I'd probably take the time to invest in a GM factory service manual and Electrical schematic manual and follow the GM diagnositcs to find out why you can't get codes out of it and then what to do once you get the codes read and can get the problem is. Chiltons or Haynes manuals suck in this department as they are generic for multiple years.

Thanks it is the worst carb because of the emission control. I want to change to the fitech efi system but it's not smog legal in california

Actually the ccc q-jet is not all that bad. Misunderstood yes for sure. Take a little time to read up on it, how it works and what goes wrong. Here's some good info on the subject. http://www.early3rdgen.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25 It's worthwhile to understand what makes it tick first, then troubleshoot.

Hey everyone,
This build thread is coming back, I finished up this year of school and have been building a collegiate level formula one car for the last seven weeks. We competed in Lincoln, Nebraska for the last six days.

Plans for this Summer:
FiTech EFI
Shackle Flip
Adjustable Bump Stops
New Rock Sliders
Wiring Clean up
Down Firing Sub
Alarm System
... and more as I think of things

Last week I purchased the shackle flip from ORD as well as FiTech EFI and fuel system. I dropped the tank installed a return and vent and finished up the shackle flip last night. The ORD kit is great bolted right on with no issues.
The frame was cracked from my dad towing his boat every weekend when he used to drive it.IMG_0634.JPG IMG_0641.JPG IMG_0642.JPG IMG_0643.JPG IMG_0644.JPG IMG_0645.JPG IMG_0646.JPG IMG_0647.JPG IMG_0648.JPG IMG_0649.JPG IMG_0651.JPG IMG_0652.JPG

I also welded up some exhaust for a buddy

Yesterday I pressed the old rubber bushings out at the shop at my school. I also blasted and painted everything.IMG_0666.JPG IMG_0667.JPG

I used a -8 AN rollover valve for a vent, and a -6 AN bulkhead fitting for the return

ORD's greasable bushing/bolts are great and they pressed in really easy

Damn, that's a good idea! I never thought to add push on fittings to my rubber lines. Would make dropping the saddle tanks in my crew cab easier IMO. Right now I just have a lot of extra length coiled up there so the tanks can come all the way to the floor.

Installing the tank is so easy now.

Does anyone know where i could get a filler neck, I destroyed mine taking it out.
