86 Coal Burner ...

Just get one for an '86 K20 Suburban at the parts store. They are cheap. No need to go scrounging around trying to fit one from a different application.

Martin

has a double

so it's got a double steering stabilizer, rancho make , so I'll get those ....

saw a video on you tube about tightening the bolts on the column...gonna try that monday...and will use red locktite for the screws, so it won't loosen again

Question as I haven't had a diesel before ... I know some smoke is normal when stepping on the accelerator ...it's very slight and I assume thats ok ? I see most diesels putting out smoke , so I guess it's normal ? I searched it online and saw video's of one throwing out tons of black smoke , which mine doesn't do .... anyway just wondering about smoke and diesels in general ?

6.2 engines have very little for emissions control (or nothing, depending on the model). The black soot blows out the back and that's just they way they run. If you're seeing only a slight amount of smoke, your engine is probably happier than most of our N/A 6.2 engines (turbines are nice :)). Mine leaves a visible plume out each side when I charge up a hill.

What's more important is the color of the smoke. White smoke is a sign that you're getting coolant in your cylinders. Excessive blueish color can mean you're burning oil. When you put the hammer down you should see black. My engine tends to start off with a slightly bluish haze, which goes away after a couple minutes of warming up. YMMV.

I wouldn't mess with the dual stabilizers unless they cut the factory mount off the axle. Just instal an OEM style replacement.

Martin

Martin ... it already has duel steering stabilizers on the truck , there just worn ... so why would I not replace an already installed double setup with a single ? I assume you know this turbo K20 is already modified and Lifted , right ? so all your answers of replace with what ever is stock isn't necessarily gonna work on a modified truck , ya know what I mean ? Martin

No, I don't.

The stock mounts are still there, I would assume? Dual steering stabilizers (or even better, quad!!!) are a thing of the past. They are unnecessary, and I feel that when ever a stock part can be used with no detriment, it should be. People are way to quick to modify things, just for the sake of modifying, not because the modification really serves any purpose.

Martin

If you really get into modifying it, you are probably going to want hydraulic assist anyway, so excess money spent on stabilizers you end up throwing away will be a waste.

I'm actually gonna wait on the stabilizers, cause it needs front shocks, and the steering column first .... it drives fine, front end doesn't shimmy or wobble , but does bounce alot on the road over minor bumps ... which i assume are the shocks ... the play in the steering wheel isn't all that bad , moves and inch or so , but feels worse cause of the loose column... hope to fix that tomorrow or tues and finally get a real feel as to wants going on, then probably certainly grease the front end if there are zerks , but think its the shocks....anyway I've had it half a week , so still just trying to get used to it...it drives alot different than my other truck ...

Drives different than your Nissan? Yeah...it's never gonna feel like that one does.

Oh I know it won't like the nissan ....never expected it too, it's just different...more like the 98 silverado I used to have and kinda like the old lifted locked yota , too ...

at least it's lookin some better with the wheels painted, lower body panels , etc... but need to splice the e brake cable , need bigger connectors the ones I got were too small ....you can see it hangin in the pic

took the steering column apart and when I got down to the barrel in the middle of the column , it fell apart ... now the steering box and draglinks are bad too ....so as my original statement about needing to replace the steering box and other stuff looks like I was right ... so who has the best price on steering boxes and draglinks.... had to get a rebuilt column for $383...

well about the norm for a column rebuilt in california , plus searching online there about the same ... so now to decide if I should go ahead and do a crossover or stick with the bump stop ? is their any advantage of crossover vs the original ???

Cross over is better.

Martin

why ? I'm not gonna really be hardcore wheeling... did all that , and broke tons with the yota in my youth ... this is more for going down dirt roads finding cool camping and fishing spots ... throw my guest bedrooms top mattress in the back, cooler, camper gear and some rods and reels and giddee up and enjoy it ... the whole reason I got this , was it was big enough to sleep in.... so done with tents ...so just fix the steering box / draglinks, etc. do a little to the interior and go .... I so need it ... I've been working pretty much straight since Christmas ... and really the last time camping was last July ... so I'm camping deficient right now ... lol

Mine has no visible smoke when "accelerating" up a hill.
