'86 Jimmy 4in Lift, 40’s, tons, 8.1 Swap- 700r4 said PNNNNN

This is not a dedicated trail rig, but does trailer to the destination usually. I am currently in the planning phase of doing a 52/56" spring swap, and getting back to being more road worthy.
I am also in the process of parts gathering for some better lighting on the truck.

My headlights have been less than adequate for quite some time now, so I am wanting to replace them with some led pods. I am also going to be putting some rock lights under it.

Most of the lights will be here by Friday. What's some opinions on replacing headlights with led pods? I think I remember @Heavyleft maybe did some?

That, and I have also came to the conclusion that I am running too low of amp alternator. Factory would have been a 68 amp I do believe, the fans alone are using 50. The fuel pump is pulling 10. That's not even considering the HEI and the ECM for the EFI. I know there are a few more little things I'm not thinking of that are pulling more amps, so I ordered a 100amp alt. from my work. Should be here tomorrow.

More power to ya! :thumb:

Do you drive enough at night to warrant upgrading the lights? I'm pretty happy with my stock setup. Day, night, rain, shine, it has always worked for me... :dunno:

Well, we do some night wheeling when we are down at Disney.

Also, the PO wiring is just horrid. On top of that, I had a buddy helping me do some wiring when we did the EFI. It did not go the best since the wiring is in very bad shape, and we had some stuff melt.

Now my headlights are so out of whack it's unreal. When my headlights are on low beam, I only have one. When I hit the high beams, one gets super bright and the other one gets really dim.
I will have to take some pictures tonight to show you.

As for the final reason, and Ebke can attest, I follow jeeps around a lot when I wheel and they like small gaps. Hence the front end body damage. My lights don't even point up in the general direction anymore. And my thoughts are, if the pods are mounted a little more different than the factory ones maybe they will last a little longer.

I would track down the wiring issues before modifying the headlights. They should be plenty good for road use if they're lighting correctly.

For offroad use, your needs will be different, but you shouldn't have issues seeing the road with stock lights.

They used to be good. Maybe I will have to face my wiring fears.

If you take good aftermarket lights and connect them to the same wiring that your good stock lights are using...you will wind up with the same problems. :doah:

Unless your headlights are actually broken (and I'm sure you'd know that by now), you hafta get into wiring. Get over it. It's easy once you get started. Buy a multimeter and learn how to use it. We will even help you. You can solve any electrical problem your truck will ever have with a very small number of tools (most of which I'm sure you already own). This is lots easier than fitting 38" tires onto a truck designed for 31s. Or engine swapping. And it's a TON easier than doing an SAS. You can handle it.

Pants = kicked. :deal:

Thanks. I probably need that.

I was going to wire the pods to a toggle switch...:doah:

I ate a snickers.....I feel better now.

The lights aren't broken. At some point during the on/off and high/low beam every light works at some point. So it's just a matter of seeing what is going on. And I actually own a multimeter.

Get to wiring.

Take it from a guy who has fixed wiring wrong most of my life.

I at some point regretted everything I fixed wrong.

Now I fix stuff right and never worry about it again

If it gets you to man up and start owning these wiring gremlins, I'd be willing to buy you a case of snickers. :deal: Sounds like a cheap investment for something that gives you electrical superpowers. :haha:

Are all of the filaments working? Or just one filament from each bulb?

Having a multimeter, you should be able to diagnose the problems pretty quickly. :thumb:

Yah don't wanna be twice as wronger.

BTW all electrical problems are bad grounds :D

Your welcome

There is some point here...most of the (automotive) wiring problems that I have encountered involved devices trying to utilize the new "wireless ground" technology... :doah:

Well, that actually is what my dad always says. And 9 outta 10 he's right.

The light issue really is funny. I will upload some pictures tonight, and we can all laugh together.
