'86 Jimmy 4in Lift, 40’s, tons, 8.1 Swap- 700r4 said PNNNNN

This is not a dedicated trail rig, but does trailer to the destination usually. I am currently in the planning phase of doing a 52/56" spring swap, and getting back to being more road worthy.

Looks nice. Do high beams work? Or do ya still have some wiring to do?
 
And no, no high beams. Well actually yes, only on the LH side. Both light up, but nothing on the RH at all. Sounds like more ground issues over there.

Left side as in the driver side? The pics show it being the passenger side. :dunno:

And you should have all 4 bulbs light up for high beams. Having just one isn't right for the left side. Or left on the right side. :wink1:

Either way, you should have 4 headlights and 4 marker lamps all illuminated during high beams.

That's not correct. The factory setup is that when you switch to high beam the low beam kick off. You have to add the relay to make all four stay on together.

Both of my rigs ('83 & '84) do this, and I haven't modded either one. I haven't looked specifically for them, but I'm pretty sure there are no relays hiding in this wiring.

Low beams-Both upper lights work with ambers on.
High beams-Both LH/Drivers side lights turn on and RH/Passenger side lights go completely off. Doesn't make sense to me.

Huh. Both the 81s I had, when you flipped the low beam to high beam the low beam switched off and the high beam switched on. Once I went to the relay setup where the lights get their juice from the battery instead of thru the headlight switch, then both were much brighter and al four stayed on.

The upper (low beam) headlights have dual filaments (one for each brightness level). The mod, if I understand it, is to send power simultaneously to both of these filaments, plus the lower headlights. So you would be lighting 6 different headlight filaments instead of the stock 4. It sounds like you may have had your upper high-beam filaments burned out if you didn't see it with the stock configuration. :dunno:


Or more grounding issues. :pimp:
 
The 1989-1991 V22 grille only lights up one set of head lights at a time. The '85-'88 lights up both sets of headlights when you turn the brights on. I assume the '81-'82 and ''83-'84 are the same.

I'll confirm that both '83 and '84 do that (as shown in pictures).

My truck (88') used to have the upper for low beams and just the lower for high beams. Someone actually told me that when I changed to all four on high that it was illegal. I didn't know any better and said I'll take my chances. It's good to know there were trucks actually built to run all four.
