'86 Jimmy 4in Lift, 40’s, tons, 8.1 Swap- 700r4 said PNNNNN

This is not a dedicated trail rig, but does trailer to the destination usually. I am currently in the planning phase of doing a 52/56" spring swap, and getting back to being more road worthy.
I need some Dodge or GM front Dana 60 dually hubs if anyone has some they'd like to sell!

I'll be putting a wanted ad up soon too.

I guess I can change the title now since I don't have 38.5's anymore.

Got my machine shop buddy making me some super beef rear spacers, and got some swapping in the works for some dually front hubs.

Hoping to have my tires mounted on the 24 bolts this weekend, and some spacers within the next week or so.

Cool!

For a moment there I thought this was turning into Justin's touchy-feely thread.

I think you should run the 42's if it were me. I had almost identical gearing on my rig when I threw the 44's on (700r4,241,4.56's) and to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised at how well it still did. Sure it wasn't 100% ideal, but I ran it like that for 2 years just fine (just put a cooler on my tranny to keep it as cool as possible), and the extra ground clearance is worth it's weight in gold IMO.

But sounds like you already are set on the 39.5's

After seeing the 42's, I'm glad I am going with the 39.5's. The 42's are decently dry rotted, and have some slicing on the side wall from the guy not trimming his jeep well enough. The 39.5's are much newer, and not all chunked up. I do believe there is more life in these 39.5's than the 42's.

However, 42's are my end goal. I want to run 5.13's/42's/doubler for my end set up. So someday I'll get there.

What is the advantage of having 24 bolts vs. 8? Just the extra clamping force on the bead?
Extra clamping force, and a thicker material. My 8 bolts had "dished" around the nuts on the face of the wheels, and didn't keep the beads held as well.

For example, @82355 was watching me try and climb a ledge a while back and said my wheel was spinning inside my tire not doing a dang thing.

ty sure I had video of that at one point. Wasn't that when you got the t case skid stuck on the lip

I've actually seen that before...can't remember, were you running some sort of inserts (PVC or Mag) with the 8 bolts? Cause most times I had seen this occur was because the insert (specifically PVC's) were not cut to the correct size

I was running cut down mag inserts.

I was running cut down mag inserts.

Hum...never really seen that with Mag's, but still could see if there was a problem with the mag's, or maybe with just that specific one on that rim that wasn't causing a good solid fit on the bead, that the same effect would happen

Also, if I was a little off camber to one side or the other, like sitting on a hill side waiting to hit an obstacle or something, my tires would blurp some air out of the bead area. Just sitting for 10-15 minutes and my tire would be flat. The clamping force on those 8 bolts was just toast. The guy that bought them was buying new outers and was going to add rock rings instead of the rebar.

Call me crazy, but I think the rock rings help to keep the clamping side of the outer rim from warping like it sounded like you had problems with...but that's just my dumb opinion

I don't think that's a dumb or crazy idea at all.

The 24 bolts are crazy thick, so I shouldn't have that issue, but I still do plan on running rock rings.
