'86 Jimmy 4in Lift, 40’s, tons, 8.1 Swap- 700r4 said PNNNNN

This is not a dedicated trail rig, but does trailer to the destination usually. I am currently in the planning phase of doing a 52/56" spring swap, and getting back to being more road worthy.
Do these DWB setups use the throttle control module like most LS's?

Yes. So on my current 8.1 in my crew cab now that has DBW, I installed the DBW pedal inside how I wanted, then a plug/wires go from the pedal to the control module, then from the control module to the throttle body. In the below picture is where I mounted all my computer and stuff. On top is my stand alone fuse box, and bolted right next to it is the throttle control module (and then below those is the ECM for the motor).

To be honest, I really like DBW. It's so simple and so easy to setup. I actually like it...but that's just me

Maybe that's the way I go then. I understand they both are going to need the extra work to make them fit, and me/wiring aren't the best of friends so maybe I go the DWB route and make the pedal fit.

FYI 8.1's came from workhorse in a p30 chassis with 4L80e transmission.

It sounds like ac is in the plans you'll need to source the right bracket to avoid having a 2nd belt and notching the frame to fit the compressor down low.

The hot rod article ripped off Larry's 8.1 recsouce thread btw. Initially it gave zero reference to ck5 or Larry until a few of us bitched to the powers above the clown who "wrote" the article.

Good to see another 8.1 coming along.

Yes I have been searching for that other bracket. And I also did notice the similarities in Larry’s thread and wondered.

I’m excited to finally use this 8.1L. I knew since I owned first one that I would own another some day.

Look for a workhorse motor home or G van version for the bracket. Medium duty can work but they might have the big power steering pump. It is not the standard Saginaw unit, but you could adapt the lines to work. The big pump would really help with hydro boost and ram assist on the steering too.

Check near the end of the 8.1 thread as Larry came across a guy that has reproduced the workhorse bracket in plate steel. Not cheap but might be the only option.

What fuse box did you go with? And is that fuse box just for the engine? Or is that your only fuse box?

Its a fuse box for the engine only. So the motor is true stand alone (really just the 12v switched wire is the only wire from the computer/fuse box/harness that is spliced into the original trucks harness). And my harness/fuse box/ECM flash was done by Tilden (part of the motor package I bought). I know they will do just harness work for you if you want too

Yeah I may have to call them and see.

Yeah after looking at there setup, that's got to be the way to go. They make it way to easy.

I see they charge $725 for the harness done and ready to go, I wonder what they would charge if I sent mine in...

I would assume it would be a bit cheaper if you sent a stock harness for them to rework...cause I think that $725 is for them to source a harness and cut it down, I could be wrong though

They said $650 if I sent my harness in. Not sure if that is worth it.

I'd be interested if you could find a place to rework your factory harness for cheaper.

Did you ask, does that $650 include a reflash of the ECM to make sure it works correctly?

Can't be that hard to take a factory takeout harness with the underhood fuse box and remove circuits you don't need. I've seen a little on YouTube about the one wire thing to make them run. Get a wiring schematic and some of that nice braided loom and go to town.

@Kay86K5 do you have a body lift at all? Or just the 4” suspension lift?

I have the 1” body lift and poly mounts, any reason I shouldn’t install them before the 8.1/4L80E goes in?

I figure this would help with install and any clearance issues that may pop up.

Actually, I heard that the 8.1 won't fit with the body lift.
