'86 Jimmy 4in Lift, 40’s, tons, 8.1 Swap- 700r4 said PNNNNN

This is not a dedicated trail rig, but does trailer to the destination usually. I am currently in the planning phase of doing a 52/56" spring swap, and getting back to being more road worthy.
It’s overkill, but so nice to have! My brother and I own a 14k bumper pull together, but he uses it for his excavation business all the time. So to make up for it he stores this gooseneck at my house and I can use it whenever. He just comes by and uses it maybe once a month, then brings it right back.
Definitely overkill but also a super nice unit!
Looks good behind the Duramax with the Blazer!
I certainly would give that a thumbs up seeing it on the road.

Another successful day out on the trails!

Only one failure to note, and one immediate change that needs to happen.

10 minutes on the trail, and my fan clutch failed. It wasn’t locking up at all. The temps climbed to about 240° and then spewed. My buddy from Oklahoma that brought his scrambler up had a good idea. He ran a self tapping screw into the base of the fan clutch and it locked it in place for the rest of the day. No over heating issues, just lots of box fan noises lol.

The other issue that was super annoying all day was that the fan blade was contacting the shroud any time the truck flexed or the radiator support flexed. The problem I believe is I have poly engine mounts with rubber rad support mounts. Rad support moves. Engine doesn’t. I’ll try to swap the rubber body mounts for poly ones. I believe I even have a set.

I left the house about 7:15 and hit the road by myself. Got to the park around 9:30 and we hit the trail.

We had a total of 7 trucks in our group. They ranged from mostly stock new Bronco to 2 rigs on 40’s.

Shane rubbed a tree and I laughed.

I then rubbed the same tree, and we both laughed.

Overall the drive train was absolutely perfect and not a single issue with the new t-case and rear driveline. I think I have a rear pinion bearing going out that’s making a little noise, so I may add that to the maintenance list.

I’ll upload a couple videos that others took, and you’ll definitely hear the box fan noises as well as the fan and shroud fighting.

Ordered a new GM fan clutch. I read online that some guys say the Murray fan clutch is louder than the GM one plus my brother told me he had the same experience. $140 from the dealership with my buddy’s shop cost. I’ll be working on that tomorrow.

Also had a buddy finally send his obligatory “instagram” poser shot. This was the group that stayed until the park closed at 7pm. We were basically the last ones in the park. The red F250 was fighting a sidewall leak most of the day and didn’t get to trail much until the end, so a couple of us stayed as late as we could.

Cleaned the shop up really good. Spent a couple hours really washing on this thing so I don’t have debris falling in my eyes on the next couple projects.

Child labor had a go for a while. Even took a solid power stance.

So the next stage goes like this:

- Pull t-case and reseal with paper gasket and gasket seal.
- Fan clutch
- Poly body mounts
- T-Rex tank with in tank fuel pump and skid plate.

The next upgrades after the repair list:

- Front selectable locker
- 4L80 swap out

I started on the poly body mounts last night. Plenty of surface rust, but everything looks to be in good shape still. I hit the rust with a wire wheel and then a coat of Por15 rust converter/sealer. I found my stash of body mounts and aluminum pucks. I don’t plan to use the pucks but will keep them just in case. That bad part about Por15 is it takes 2-6 hours to cure.

You've got gloves...do like impatient me and slap it together wet and send it!
Well I went ahead and did the right thing and listened to you. Everything but the upper cap was dried from yesterday. I painted the upper cap then slapped it back together. Curious to see if that alone helps the fan and shroud relationship.

Last night I started removing the fuel cell and mocking the factory style tank back in the Jimmy.

I stared with draining the fuel and removing the pump, prefilter, and lines that would not be reused with the factory tank.

I slapped the new tank and straps in and I am pleased with the fit.

I then about crapped myself. The location of where the hole was cut for the fuel cell sump lines up perfectly where the in tank pump will drop. Luck was on my side there!

The pump and sending unit should be here Thursday. I’ll get the lines ran and ready for install.

My plan for the hole in the floor is just a basic marine hatch with some foam around the edges to seal it up against the floor.

Those marine hatches are cool but on my kids pickup I was like I can't justify this price for a pickup bed and a sender I hope to never touch again. Eventually I want to get a piece of bed floor and just rivet it down but for now he's getting an 1/8" piece of aluminum riveted down from a damaged toolbox I have at work.

FYI-I've made at least 4 other similar plates from the same toolbox for trucks at work. I don't generally pull beds or pull tanks for work truck fuel pumps lol.

I didn’t think $42 was that big of a deal.
