'86 K30 Crew Cab Build

I decided to regear my truck, since i am doing diff work anyways, and add an Eaton Truetrac limited slip in the rear. I had a manual trans long bed truck with a Detroit Locker in it once before and really learned to dislike it on a street driven rig, especially in the snow/ice. I'm going with Yukon 5.13's which will be just right when I get the planned NV4500 swap done, I'll deal with the higher revs on the highway til then.

I got the ring gear installed and carrier bearings pressed on today. I'll work on the pinion set up this week. I bought a crush sleeve eliminator set up for it too. I've never set up my own gears before, so hopefully it works out.

Thanks for the input guys. I have been studying and it seems doable. I still need to find/buy a in/lb beam torque wrench, then I'm good to go. Eric offered to come babysit me if I needed him too, so one way or the other I should come out alright.

Take your time, it's not too bad.

Yeah, 14b's are not too bad setting up

It's picking them up that's the problem.

I'm leaving it in the truck... If push comes to shove I can do this at my work on the weekend and we have a couple of forklifts there.

Got my rear end tore down all the way. Found a bunch of chips/drill shavings in the bearing cap bolt holes. There were even some of the chips mashed into the case between the bearing cap and case.

I'm going to get my pinion assembly put together tomorrow. I hope to have it back on the road this weekend.

Also, no magnet in my case? Is the magnet something special or can I just get one at the local hardware store? I have a bad ass little hard drive magnet I could stick in there?

Managed to install and setup the 5.13 gears in my 14 bolt. Big Thanks to Eric @blazinzuk for answering my questions and helping interpret the pattern. He saved me a bunch of headaches by pointing me in the right direction when I had questions and when he had cell service.

Did the first 20 mile break-in drive and so far so good. I think I'm going to love this ratio.

Everyone likes pics so I'll put up a few.

I built a yoke holder out of 3/8" plate and a chunk of 1.5" pipe it worked awesome to get the pinion assembly dialed in. I used it a bunch because I outsmarted myself for hours trying to setup the crush sleeve eliminator (I kept adding shims when I needed to be subtracting them) I eventually figured it out. I had this together and apart more times than i kept track of.

Here is my setup checking backlash, new shiny parts Trackloc and Yukon gears.

Here's where my pattern ended up, Excited to have it done and back on the road.

Next up is the front D60.

Just changed the rear diff oil after the first 100 miles per Eric's advice. I did 20 mile heat cycle drives every night this week after work. So far so good.

Everything looks good in there to me and loving the new ratio. Really glad I went this deep.

I measured the old gears at .035 backlash when I pulled them. The rear end used to make annoying clunking sounds with power on/off, clutch in/out. Driving around is just so much smoother, really pleased I pulled the trigger on this.

Daaaaaaaaang

Yeah, 3X max spec seems like a lot, all the bearings felt fine and nothing was broken inside the diff. I guess it just has a LOT of miles on it. When I found that little treat, I was glad to be fixing it.

In for the build, updates, and to NV4500 install.

I'm hoping you get your NV4500 swap done first so I can watch one get done in real time before I tackle mine.

I'm planning to drill/tap the transmission case and bolt it onto my stock hydro bellhousing.

Redrilling the transmission was the plan but I found an AA bellhousing instead. Should be a pretty similar swap other than that.

What T-case are you using? I just finished up my NV4500/205 install about two months ago

Round pattern NP205 behind a SM465

I'll browse through your thread, thanks for the heads up.
