'86 K30 Crew Cab Build

Love the bumper!

Sucks to hear about the NV4500. From around here seeing 3rd gear have crap synchros and/or pop out of gear isn’t horribly uncommon. Seems lots of old farm trucks relied on 3rd gear to get things done. I’ve personally had 2 with 3rd gear issues

Thanks. I'll put up some more pics in a few I got it mostly welded out today, Bending it up like this makes the welding much easier. Did it all with my little 110 Hobart.

That doesn't make me happy to hear on the trans. I'm holding out hope it is the shift tower.

Fingers crossed, the tower issue you describe may be the whole issue as well. One can only hope since they aren’t exaxlty a light trans to have to remove.

Got the bumper just about finished today, I need to cut a couple of small angle reinforcements and fit up the wings. The winch mount, frame mounts, pull points, and skin are all welded out. Did everything with my little 110V Hobart. Tripped the 20 Amp breaker in my garage 4 times. The duty cycle on these little welders is limiting when you have a lot of wire to burn.

Here's a few in progress photos.

Pull points, 3/4" plate welded to the 1/4" frame mount. I ground a nice big V and filled them in and ground it smooth with a flap disc.

4 1/2" bolts per side attaching it to the frame, I tacked the nuts in place inside the frame rail. I used 3 factory holes and drilled a fourth per side.

The winch mount separates from the bumper. It is held in place with 3/8" bolts. I match drilled the winch mount to the bumper skin and tacked the nuts on that as well.

Welded everything that touched between the frame mount and bumper skin. Don't look too close at those welds, they're OK but I'm not a professional.

Here's how it sits on the truck, it fit right back on perfect after welding. I did fit it up and tack it together mounted on the frame so it wouldn't be a fight to get it back on. My truck sits slightly higher on the passenger side, that angle is not an optical illusion, I think i'll try to shim the drivers side core body mount and line that up better. The lean is courtesy of the dented front fender.

It is just right for standing on.

Yeah i am hating the thought of pulling that thing back out and having to drain that expensive oil.

You could use something to screen it as you drain. We have paper funnels with a screen in the bottom for use with paint. I use one when I'm draining fluid and plan to re-use it.

mmmm space dust.

Bumper looks good.

Sorry to hear about the third pedal problems though.

That's a real good idea, thanks for that suggestion.

A fellow beer snob, yeah that's real good stuff.

Thanks, I'm still hoping it's a shift cover, looking for a good replacement now.

Finished the wings on my bumper and welded everything out. I just need to pick up a couple more flap discs to finish cleaning it up and paint it. Still going to trim the fangs on my fenders but it fits with untimmed fenders with a 1/2” or so clearance.

Get a type 27 flap disc. They are flat and much easier to get a smooth finish with nice edges.

I’ll look for that type, thanks.
We have plans to head to SLC this weekend I might have a couple kicking around if you can't find one.

Or get done resin fiber discs. Those work good for finishing type stuff too

Thanks Eric, I’m sure i can find one, I’m going to paint it in the booth at work, and we have a bunch of various grinding/sanding discs there. One of them will work.

Are you going to trim horizontal with the top of the side wings or at an angle to match the bottom of the wings?

I hadn’t considered an angled cut? I guess I’ll draw on it with a sharpie and see what looks best to my eye. I was thinking i’d just cut it off horizontal, I think it will end up hidden behind the wing either way.
