87 Dodge Raider - Beadlocks & Grabbers

Lot quicker to swap in a stock engine, and keep driving it.

Martin

If it were a vehicle I actually needed to drive then that would be the no brainer choice but this is a toy and I don't mind another project.

So have you laid out the definite plan?

Nothing is 100% but most likely I am going to go 5.3, SM465, np241, stock axles, 34-35" tires. I wanted to go NV4500 or NV3500 but I think it's cost prohibitive compared to the SM465. I am buying another 32 spline SM465 from Upstate on here and I am going to buy a 241 locally for $100 shortly.

Watch that 'Might As Well' stuff or you'll end up like Greg72 with Mog axles and custom stainless headers...

Be careful with a v8 on top of IFS. Other than the constraints you might face with putting the motor in; you're also adding a few hundred pounds on top of an already not ideal front suspension to be wheeling. You better just SAS it and make everything easier :D

Well, i am keeping an eye out for a matching set of axles just in case I come across a really good deal

Ok, update. The local np241 purchase fell through so I have been scouring the interwebs trying to find a 32 spline input driver's drop np241 and wouldn't you know I happened to find one that had just been posted on craigslist 4 hrs earlier. It is in New Mexico so I am having it shipped via Fastenal store to store. Wound up paying $400 plus whatever the freight cost is, probably $250. Oh, did I forget to mention that the 241 has a complete NV4500 attached to it? :D

Had me there for a minute....

nice score

Haha, you went from a story about getting hosed to a story about a good deal.

Ok, please weigh in on my thinking here. Looking at a set of 1 ton ford axles a buddy of mine has for sale. They have 4.10 gears which I thought would be a good fit with the 5.3, NV4500, np241, and 35-37s. I had put a lot of thought into my K5 gearing but haven't had a chance to drive it yet and it will only be driven on the weekends, rarely seeing more than 55 mph so it doesn't have to be perfect. It has 5.3, SM465, 203/205, 4.56 gears, 42" tires. Since the SM465 doesn't have overdrive and is geared low I did't want to go higher than 4.56. I want the Raider to be more of a daily driver so it will see higher speeds but I don't want to go bigger than 37s. What are your thoughts everyone? 4.10 seems to be middle of the road and pretty safe but 4.56 or 3.73 aren't out of the question if you think that is a better overall combination.

Do you have inspections down there and will they let you ride around w/ all that tread outside the fenders? How about some heep or toy axles?

What's first and final drive ratio on the 4500? 4.10s will probably be good for either size tire, might want a little deeper for the 35s.

Nope, no inspections. Pretty much anything goes. We don't even have emissions in my county. Ratios should be 1 (5.61), 2 (3.44), 3 (1.71), 4 (1.00), 5 (.73). Obviously for street driving I would be starting in 2nd all the time. At this point, yota axles would be the wrong drop. I want high pinion driver drop which I think means I am pretty much limited to Ford axles right? Are there any Jeep applications that had a high pinion driver drop dana 44? In my head ideally I would want a full width ford 8.8 rear and dana 44 front or a matching set of dana 44s or I could go Explorer 8.8 rear and early bronco dana 44 front but I haven't seen any of these combos in the $1,000 range that are already geared 4.10 and unwelded carriers. Could be open or locked, just not welded.

Still not sure if I want to go SAS but I have found two 3/4 ton axle sets that I am interested in. One set is open/open with 4.10s for $500 and the other set is open/welded with 3.73s for $800 including the Jeep Cherokee they are under. Here is the CL ad for the Cherokee

3.73 is less gear than I wanted but if I am going to run 33-35s then I think it will work and the front axle is already set up for 3 link with coils and high steer. I could probably use the coil buckets, coils and shocks on the Raider. Rear I would probably 4 link with coils. Hopefully they didn't weld the spider gears to the carrier in the rear and I could just put in another set of spider gears. I could probably sell the rest of the drivetrain for at least $400.

The stock axles I already have are 4.625 so they could easily handle a 35" tire but the stock IFS suspension is questionable especially with a 5.3 replacing the 2.6 4 cylinder up front.

So, what do you think? Keep stock axles/suspension, buy the 4.10 axles, or buy the Jeep with 3.73s and part out whatever I don't use?

Keep looking for better gears.

I thought 4.10s with 35s and an NV4500 was pretty respectable. If I got the 3.73 axles I might stick to a 33-34" tire. This is mainly going to be a street driven truck, not a hardcore offroader. If I was running a SM465 instead of a NV4500 would that change your opinion any? That is still a possibility, I could always flip the NV4500 and get a free 241 out of the deal. There might be a length advantage to the SM465 and I think overall they are more robust (cheaper to maintain and fewer issues)

Jeep axles to week for a 5.3 with 35's or 37's

Haha, not Jeep axles, 3/4 ton Ford axles, dana 44 front, dana 60 rear. Moot point on the cherokee. Sold this evening. I'm waiting to hear back on the 4.10 axles but I will keep my eye out for something else. Would really like to keep it under $500

These would be bad ass but I am not sure I need/want that much gear and they are well above the price range I want to spend and the front doesn't even have axle shafts in it.
