87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

Are you going to put a catch basin under the lathe that drains back to a tank w cutting oil pump? Or go old school and pump the fluid yourself?

I was just planning on a squirt can as needed...

didn't have the strip steel I wanted for the feet, so I'll pick some up next time I'm out at my welder bud's place... gonna work on getting it back together tonight... going out to put Mutt's front shaft in now, while there's still light...

:haha: that's no joke... chucks are expensive as he!! for these things...

one project I'd like to see about doing at some point is turning some drift/line up tools out of hex stock.. had bought a bunch of neat homemade ones back in the day that unfortunately got stolen.. only issue is, I'm guessing it'd be best to make them out of tooling steel, and I don't know what's involved with that... :dunno:

cleaned out and washed the K5 today.. :woot: hopefully I can get to working on the hood tomorrow...

it's good to see you motivated like this...man you get a lot done...I wish I could say the same for myself...but my back is out...I got something like George Bush has...viral bronchitis of some sort and I have been having to work sick for 18 days straight...

What all can one do with a metal lathe?

well, that sucks... feel better.. :pimp: it felt great to clean all the junk out of the K5 and wash it today.. anxious to get back on it...

all kinds of projects.. for work i can now surface coupling flanges and the like... cut threads, turn down diameters, bore holes, enlarge openings, the possibilities are endless...

need a live center for the tailstock too... basically a bearing mount for longer items to be turned/chucked up... like for gun barrels and such...

I'll be the first customer for the "Ryoken Green" Armaments 5.56 Bull Barrel....:D

That's a "Green" agenda I can get behind...

eh, gun's are not one I play with in this state.. i have enough expensive hobbies... :doah: :haha:

O-1 steel (oil hardening) or S-7 (shock resistant) would be two pretty good choices. Relatively easy to work with and harden yourself. I've machined both in the past, but only used O-1 for drifts and such.

Just my .02

sweet, thanks.. :D

I definitely need to read up a bit more on materials now that I'm gonna play with this thing.. ya get kinda used to just playing with mild steel when fabbing... :doah: :haha:

I did have to get some tooling steel bars for my HF press a while back from Mcmaster... just ordered new belts for the lathe this morn, they'll be in wed.... still hunting a deal on a chuck...

on a K5 note, I actually have the hood out of the "warehouse" and back in the garage on the sawhorses... but I've been doing a complete cleanout/reorganize of the Snappy box the last day or so.. my tools where hammered...

hopefully tomorrow I can get the bodywork finished up on the underside of it and actually give you guys some new K5 update pics....

well, that ain't gonna happen now... i just went down and did a big grind on it for the next app, and realized I have resin and hardener, but no fiberglass... :doah: nothings gonna be open tomorrow either.. oh well, this coming weekend... I've got some other things to keep myself busy...

at least I'm thinking about it... :doah: :haha:

:haha:

soon brothers, I promise... :deal:

actually I will work on it, I have to reinstall the hood and make up some small templates to finalize the last of the glasswork on the underside, before I pull it back off and actually do that final glassing...

just nothing really worthy of pics... :doah:

When can we start putting in orders for machined parts? :pimp:

when I learn how to use it and figure out what to machine... :haha:

it's comng together.. looking like I may have to replace the tailstock, but I need a chuck first...

good to see ya back around, feel better!
