87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

That peeling and lifting is from bad/improper prep work. I've had standing water in my old rig for little over a yr (stored outside with no top or interior for that matter) and it never peeled/lifted at all. Rig is still running around and its still holding up and that was 9 yrs ago.

i'm prepping the black with 280.. my bud's stepside is sweet.. nice and thick, hasn't failed yet.. little chalked.. hopefully i can get 2 good coats on.. i only have to do the floor.. no wheel wells, side panels, etc... just like rolling non-skid on a boat! :haha:

and the grittier, the better.. reason being, 95% of it will have the rubber truck bedmat i use on it... hopefully it'll dry good.. on level ground, the floor is balls flat, according to my wetsanding the other day.. plus i usually leave the mats out till it dries..

i'm not sold on any of the other non-commercial ones, Al's, etc... and i'm definitely not having line-x or rhino come in and spray it after that psycho cage masking.. i've had this gal kicking around awhile now and i'd like to use it.. even i like to save a penny here and there... :haha:

gonna take me about 5, 6 hrs to finish demasking the cage... :eek1: it's like x-mas morn pulling it off! :woot: :haha:

Sounds like you've got a good plan!

FYI, The other big reason I haven't been real happy with Herc. is that it is impossible to clean, so it always looks filthy. That's ok, I suppose, but I like the option of cleaning.

looking at your cage, I have a question, why no V or window cross bar? Not a ton of added benifits? Or? Like always, great great work and inspiration for what i wanna do in the future!

This is true, you can get most of the mud out, but once dirt hits herculiner it always is trapped and looks dirty.

it's the "or"...... :haha:

i was concerned about jersey DMV, inspection, and tickets for obstruction of view... bad enough I'm gonna be running a 4" cowl.. another compromise i had to make... just like the climb-thru b-hoop...

excellent question, surprised noone had asked me that.....

and thanks, i'm digging the way it's coming together... :woot:

well, tell me what you think of this.... I was gonna apply one of my boat tricks to it... basically i was gonna pour off a qrt out of the gallon, run it thru a strainer, then use that grit free batch for the last overcoat...

it's a trick we use on non-skid boats.. to really seal in and smooth over the top of the grit.... do you think that would help?

woah. that right there = genius...

it's the "simple" things. :D

those were the pics I was waiting for with some light in there, brings out the cage color and you can start to see the true copper in those pics. I know nothing really compares to daylight to bring out the colors but thank you for lighting the dungeon up man.

As far as the Herc goes we tried straining it on a buddys rig quite some time ago. We were painting the exterior. Just didn't work too well, you know more than I about that side of stuff but we tried alot of stuff and a couple of multi stage things, just never worked that well.

What we did was just hit it with a some scotchbrite (I think red) that knocked down the really rough stuff but we had to paint over it. The scuffing ruined the finish. Of course his didn't look chalky over the next couple of years.

I am surprised you don't have a connection with a line x (my favorite) or speed liner dealer or something. The boat places around here use it all the time.

That thing is really coming together. When you first painted the cage red I wasnt so sure about that, but seeing it with the black interior and the copper it looks amazing.

I also think that you made the right decision keeping the lower dash copper, Thats one of the things I love about these trucks is that the body color is carried over into most of the interior. And you incorporated that nicely along with all the custom stuff in there.

I hope someday I can see the truck in person, becuase I dont think all that work could be truly appreciated through a computer screen.

it's amazing what a camera thats not obtained in a box of Cracker Jacks can do.. :haha: same lighting i always have, the new camera just takes suuuuuch a better pic... :D

i actually wouldn't mind a pretty flat looking floor, that's why i wasn't concerned abou adding UV to the Herc.. little fade would have helped i bet..

I've only rolled herc a couple times... we never use it on boats... we either do texture added paint, or gelcoat... but you did just give me an idea, stay tuned...

thanks bud...... :D the colors really "pop" a lot better with the new camera...

I really think the color combo is just gonna look better and better... adding a couple touches of the red/orange to the undercarriage should really help tie it all together... not a ton, just a couple of the standards.. custom razorbacks front and back, front and rear shackles, and the hi-steer stuff..

no copper underneath, but i am keeping the copper bezels on the dash..

the engine compartment will have the mill red.. the shock tower/tiebar setup will be black more than likely.. maybe some red MSD wires...

then the whole composite airbox done in black, with this air cleaner lid sitting on a 6" filter....

i'll be running a K&N element and pre-filter due to the potentially moist environment... they just hold up to it way better than a paper element..

so overall, i think the splashes of red will work with the copper... i'm happy i went with the 3 color scheme... it's definitely a little different.... trying to keep it tasteful, well as non-circus-y, :haha: as you can and still run a bright red/orange cage... :doah:

any detractors? anyone think it's "too much"? :ears: criticism always welcome....

anyone think it's "too much"?

The whole build is too much - that's why we love it! :waytogo:

Flat black on flat black just wouldn't be you. It's your truck, make it the way you want. You'll still have plenty of drooling subscribers. :deal: :D

oh, and part of the cage will be done in black pads too, that should help break it up... I need to order my other remote filters soon from summit for mocking up the rad support.... so, i may as well throw padding on that list..

the scary part will doing an order with 4 treks... maybe x-mas next year... that may time out well... :haha:
