87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

Maybe we need to make a reusable stencil. Although I don't know what material would work for that.

hey bud... in reality for this project, you can do it a few ways.. for a bit of extra work I can just take hard copies of each letter and trace em onto the backing paper the plexi comes with, than cut each letter out with a blade and use the film as a stencil.. I may do that for the flame work in the above one.. tho you'd have to be careful, it wouldn't hold up well at all in the blast cab. but it could probably be workable.....

but it's definitely a lazier man's approach to just peel that, slap your sticker on and go..

the sandblast stuff holds up pretty well... it also helps that the material has a bit of stiffness to it... the thing I've noticed when using anything as a stencil is, that really helps...

the vinyl only over a stiff backing can be difficult to apply... once you peal to apply, it's so floppy and stretches easy... even when you do the "leave the backing and work your way down" method, it can be challenging due to alignment issues..that's what made the sandblast nice was that once pealed, it had some body to it still, cuz it's so thick...

what would probably be ideal for this type of project is vinyl, maybe a bit on the heavier side than your standard windshield sticker thickness (if they even make it) to blast protect a bit. but more importantly would be that it is set up like your zombie stickers.. where they have that semi clear, top paper backing.. that way once peeled, the paper keeps the stencil from getting distorted before/while your sticking it... even if you applied the whole thing, than come in and pull out each letter after applying...

I think doing this technique with your zombie squad one in the rear center console window for the PC/amp in 2 colors could look really sick....

I'll send ya a pm in a week or 2 for that order... knew you had been preoccupied lately......... other than getting that replacement charcoal one for Mutt's windshield, the other stuff isn't pressing at all...

Appreciate it.

I can think of a couple thicker vinyl films that are less expensive than the sandblast mask. Especially if clear vinyl would be okay.

The semi-transparent stuff you're talking about is called transfer paper or application tape. I could send you some on a small roll to use next time.

amazing how what would appear to be the simplest of things.............. :haha:

eh, just cut a rectangle for the heat.. ..

what a pain in the arse... first, locating was a big enough pain....

than I must of pulled the dash and heater out eleventy times to modify the heater box for proper height...

than I had to add some structure to the underside of the dash to retain it's flat rigidity....

grrrrrrrrrrrrrr... damn garage heat went out.....

I was gonna prime the dash today.... I'll have to get "creative" to warm up the garage tomorrow so I can shoot primer.... :pimp:

couple oil filled electric heaters and running the dryer with the vent inside should take the edge off... :haha:

oh, yeah, focker runs like 500 a month if I run it every day...

it's why I didn't do much in jan, but I'm trying to get some projects going before I go back to work, electric bill be damned! :haha:

I've gotten a bit spoiled with it the last couple yrs.. I don't mind it cold, just taking the edge off is fine.. at least your out of the wind..

biggest issue is getting stuff to dry...

finally, paint tomorrow....

at this point in this project, these are the next ones on the list.....

1 - the rest of my time off will be spent finishing up the driverside bodywork... what? you can only look at one side at a time!?! :haha:

nah, the fender is raw steel.. the sectioning is done but I gotta zinc it thru paint.. but the qrter panel sectioning is only 1/2 done.. still gotta weld/fab that... hood, fender and lower back will need paint.. can't afford a $400 gal of Chromabase with Mutt upcoming... that'll wait till the next time I delve into this.. if I can get it all in primer now, that's cool..

2 - just bought a new steering box for it... but the next real purchase for this will be a friggin windshield! soooooooo sick of having it out... :haha:

after that it'll probably be some crumbly Al's liner on the floor.. gotta restrip the pickup tailgate and get it thru paint.. and I can finally get the interior closed up... so sick of blowing all the dust out.. but the gate will have to wait till LATE this summer, more likely sept/oct...

also added 10' of 2" to my Mutt tube order to build the back bumper/stinger for this... but who knows when that'll happen... :haha:

so the fab list is getting lighter now that the dash will be done... really down to the bumper, shock mounts and finish the tool wall for fab.. everything else is bolting parts in...

that being 7 g's to eleventy $$$ being the sticking point.. :dunno: :doah:

oh, and a 5 g, 500 hr Mutt project coming up first.. :doah: :dunno:  :woot::grind::weld:

oh, and before I primed that, I blasted it in the new blast cab.. 1/2 at a time...:haha: hung a towel over the door opening with it sticking out! :pimp:

forgot one.. actually I may do this now over the bodywork....

the lower glovebox x-member/hinge area..

and the composite kick panel from it, down to the firewall to protect the ECM, etc....

I have the x-member steel and the smoked plexi, and the lower composite.. and the latches... just need to finalize a hinge for the plexi after the lower stuff is built...

that sounds funner than the sectioning...

Man, that dash is sick! I can't imagine the work that went into that puppy! Excited to see you digging into this thing again!

check another off the "one off" list... :haha:

thanks mang.. I probably have 80 hr's in it or something...

it just kinda seemed the right direction... keeping the stock lines was important in the look I was going for with the center console/cage blending into the stock dash..

and I think if I get the right etch job in the plexi, it could be cool when on.. I have a new idea for that.. the line work all needs to be much more dainty and involved... right now I'm working on a much more subtle 2 color bowtie.. also a GMC...

but working on that is actually below playing PS 3 these days! :haha:

unfortunately Mutt, health and finances have reared their suckyness in this build... but I do miss it and need to start investing in it again soon...

have to make that brain pic... :screwy: :saweet:

hopefully it looks exponentially better tomorrow night painted black and installed.. ;)

I've done one before... and I've done a bunch in center consoles in Mopars..... but never with the marine stuff...

pretty neat idea, can't say I've ever seen it in a glove box...

and it really may be fave mod over the bezel, console, etc, yada... that was like the 2nd or 3rd project on that rig...

what are you painting the dash with...standard or are you putting something on for extreme durability?
