'87 Suburban Build "munepit" I'm Back! Missed all you guys!

I dont know if its my tierod but I just ordered a 1 1/2 DOM tierod from ORD.

Did you order the bracket to attach the stabilizer to the tie rod? I take it you ordered new tie rod ends to go with it?

Also, you said the steering was slow? I would talk to ORD and ask them what length there crossover arms are. Here is the dimensiosn of yours from ballistic...

Now, this should not cause death wobble or interference. But if ORDs arms are shorter, then that would change the steering ratio, and give you less travel with the ballistic arm. You may be able to put it on the shorter hole, but that might be too quick and more stressfull on your frame and box.

Also, you said it feels like it's catching? Are these different wheels? Are the wheel weights hitting the caliper or anything? You might want to check the wheels up and spin them to make sure they are free.

Yep! Got the rod ends and the stabilizer bracket. I wont get it in time for the mud bog on Sat. but, I needed it!

What the hell. I just called Balistic, Talked to Ryan. Se said he has never heard of that before. Calling ORD now!

If they are differnt sizes one will move faster or slower then the other. Not sure if thats what your experiencing but it might be part of the issue.

Maybe Im missing something here, but, If the Balistic Crossover arm is lets say 8" long and I move the rod end from the draglink to the inner hole that is supposed to be for the highsteer, the only difference I can see is the steering wouldn't be not as sharp of a turning radius, because of the leverage.
It looks like the arm Kidjethro is useing from Balistic is shorter than mine but Im sure he has the Pitman arm from ORD, the same one I have.

Sorry if you cant understand my wording, I hardly can.

Thanks for all your help!!

Ya their is friction. Its smooth but tight. The steering wheel pulsates, like it catches and releases over and over. Weird.

Does this happen all the time or only when turning? Sounds like your kingpin is bound up, could be that the cap is to tight and any imperfections in the road are being transferred through the wheel.

Mainly just going straight. Too tight, I was thinking the opposite, I was going to add a washer on one side and tighten the bolt on the springless side.

Im taking the rest of the day off to figure this out. I will be posting on my Droid soon.

I don't know if I fixed the problem yet, but ALL the bolts on the U Joints on the axle were not tight. I tightened the crap out of them, bet I got 2 full turns out of the bolts. Also got one full turn out of the center bolt on the springless arm. Then put in a fat washer on top of the spring on the drivers arm. Added more power steering fluid and strarted it up it it turns smoothly without the tires. Putting the tires back on and test drive! We will see how it goes.

Much better! At least good enough for the mud bog this Sat. I'm going hydro assist as my very next project, starting next week. I saw the thread about cheap hydro assist. I think I'm going that direction.

Alot of your problem is probably the one side having a springless arm and the otherside has a normal king pin setup with a spring, ya need to order the other spingless arm or the blank for that side.

As long as the arm is adjusted correctly it shouldn't matter.

Thanks for the help and advice! I'm going to order the blank springless cap today.

Im not talking about the arm, Im talking about the side with the factory spring set up still. Could be causing some death wobble on the driver side.

He just put a new spring and bushing in there if I remember correctly, along with an extra washer, it shouldn't matter. It's probably his tires out of balance, or a worn tie rod end, or toe out of adjustment, etc. There are probably still millions of kingpins out there with springs and bushings that don't have death wobble. I still believe that isn't his problem assuming his other arm is adjusted correctly since there is no spring preload. They both work fine if set up correctly, should not matter if there is one of each.

If the spring is real old, you may be right.

I didn't put in a new spring. I took out both springs and cleaned both and the both looked real good, and were the same heigth. So, I reused the spring and cap. The tierod I got from a junk yard. That could be the problem also. The rod ends look good, But could be out of alignment a little. I ordered a big tierod from ORD the other day. Today I ordered a Balistic Fab springless hi-steer arm. I am not going hi-steer but I got it anyway. I also ordered the bronze bushings today.
