87 TTB K5 - Luxury Prerunner

I'm just curious, when and what application did they use bw stuff?

As for the cage, it's nasty! Sadly however, I don't feel you have any possible legal recourse. Without having a contract that stated specifics, he can say he did the job you requested and can simply say, "you never stated that you wanted a specific type of weld or to meet any specific requirements." and it will be a simple your word against his.

that cage work is baaaaad.

Small Claims may be an option......might be better off voicing your opinion on his work via yelp, google, yahoo reviews, etc.

I have a 1991 K3500 with an SM465 that has a Borg Warner transfer case. I've seen a few behind SM465's in 1988-1998 trucks. Well 1988-1991.....

OMG..those are crap welds!! :doah:
Did they even look at you when you picked it up. I would be ashamed to make someone pay for that

All of those welds weren't visible until I cut the cage out - either tight against the cab, or the floor. He obviously didn't build the thing properly - i.e. tried welding things he shouldn't of in place. Everything that was visible was pretty good.

I'm going to be paying a visit to his shop this week and having some words with him and see what we can work out. Ironically the shop I'm working with now has a suburban that was being done at the same time as my cage at the other shop. The owner got fed up with all of the same BS and moved his truck.

On a more positive note, I did some painting this weekend. :D

It's slow and a pain in the ass, but I'm painting one or two panels at a time since I don't have a booth. I'm getting pretty good results. I had the passenger door off so I shot it. I also have my motor out and partially apart so I decided to shoot my water pump. Using TCP Global base coat and Southern Polyurethanes clear (CA compliant unfortunately). I really like the clear.

I thought I was the only guy that wanted to shoot clear on his entire engine... Looks fantastic, when do we get to see pictures of the TTB?

Since I have the motor out I decided to go through a few things on it (I have this condition where I cannot leave good enough alone - my old boss calls it perfection paralysis). The "CNC" port work done to the heads was disguise or "under cover" porting - which doesn't benefit me much since I'm not racing. I sent the heads out to Mike Stark at CFM Performance in IN - really cool dude and very reasonable compared to some other porters. He's going to do his Stage 3 package which includes bowl port, exhaust port, profiling the combustion chambers. He's also gonna do a 5 or 7 angle valve job, mill the heads enough to get a 60cc chamber, and port my intake manifold. I'll post some pics once I get them back, which should be later this week. I also swapped out the Cam, which was a reground ZZ4 cam - again a modified spec part for the 604 crate engine. I went with lunati 20080722 which is an HR cam with 282/290, 231/239 at .050, .535/.550 lift, and 110LSA. Should be a good improvement over what I had and compliment the port work nicely, and not too radical. Lastly, I'm throwing a slightly thinner gasket on - we used .051 gaskets originally (I have a brand new set of the GMPP .051 gaskets if anybody wants them - I wont be able to use or return them). I picked up Felpro 1003's which has a compressed thickness of .041. You can see in the photo below that there's .000 deck clearance. I can actually get the piston to stick out of the bore about .005 by rocking it. This will give me about perfect quench right between .036 and .041. Static CR will be about 10.9:1 which is a little high, but should be safe with injection and polished chambers. I'll be excited to fire this thing up with the new mods!

I hope soon, but realistically will probably be a month or two before there's much of anything to look at.

The paint looks nice.

I can't help but wonder WHY you are doing finish-work like that so early in the build process though... I painted my engine a while back, and with all the mock-up work and little "things" that happen around the shop, it's going to need to be repainted again at the end of the build.

Same goes for perfectly painted fenders, etc. Custom suspension and massive wheeltravel are definitely going to throw you a few surprises in terms of tire interference. It would be a shame to take a cutoff wheel to miles-deep black paint to resolve clearance issues once the suspension is bolted in.... :dunno:

Definitely subscribed! Take as long as you want with this build.... I'm a patient person. :D

I know its not logical, but I'm bored :). I shouldn't have many clearance issues as I'm running glass fenders and will run glass bedsides as well

Sometimes the "squirrel" effect can be beneficial to our sanity. Getting something accomplished takes a big bite out of the overall project.

Looks good.from here. that sucker gonna scream. The 604 is impressive untouched....for what it is.

Yessir. I've heard stories that GM is conservative on their numbers (400/400) and guys will get 425hp+ right out of the crate with a good tune - and that's at 9.6:1 with a wimpy cam!

I'm just curious, when and what application did they use bw stuff?

1 tons, as far as I know the NBS trucks 88+, had BW transfer cases. I think in the late 90's they went all to NV transfer cases.

More photos. March performance powder coats all of their stuff - mine was clear powder which looked cool for about 5 minutes. It chips, and I got lots of overspray on it and tried to wipe off with acetone which really marred the finish. so... I soaked all of the pulleys and brackets in a bucket of aircraft stripper for about and hour, took a nylon bristle brush to them and it came off like it was nothing. Everything looked like brand new with the powder gone. I had some other parts lined up to be anodized so I took all of this stuff along with and did black type II with bright dip. Everything turned out awesome! I'm a big fanatic of anodized stuff, especially black, so it was well worth the effort to me. That aircraft stripper is nasty s*it! I thought for a while I would be going to the ER bc I got a bunch on my hands - fingers started going numb and all.

Head and intake are supposed to arrive Friday - assuming that happens I'll have the engine back together Saturday and will post completion photos.

I hear ya on the chipping clear power coat on the March brackets. It's annoying...
The anodizing looks great though!

I kinda like the way the Type II black anodizing looks better than the Type III hard anodizing anyway. It may not be as durable over time, but I still like it. Looks really nice. This is going to be a cool truck when it's through. :thumb:
