87K506 Build thread

Well did some work since i've been out of school, mainly rippin all the stuff out of the inside. I have since discovered that my blazer is rust free! The only problems are with the floor, where the seats cracked the floor at one of the mounting points, nothing that a small weld cant fix. Otherwise its extremely solid, no rust, motor runs good, all in all an excellent excellent start, not bad for $2500. Any who here are some pics of stuff....

Looks like this is an awesome start to the build, I wish mine had been in as good a condition when I started. Oh well, it made it lots easier to start rippin fenders off. :D If you ever want to check out some of the stuff I did to my chevy just holler at me and come on over. I am in the process of tubing the front end right now.

I don't know how you are planning on doing your lift, but Offroad Design has an awesome rear shackle flip and is what I went with on the beast. The front of mine was spring under from the factory, so when the dana 60 went in (they come spring over) that gave me the lift up front.

I'm prolly gonna do just a rough country 4" lift, cause money is kinda tight and im tryin to get it in pretty nice condition and fix a few things on it. Its gonna be just a nice decent wheeler, nothing too hardcore cause it costs money. I've never seen one with spring under, thats unusual.

Thank ya thank ya, it doesnt need alot, but i wanna try to do it right...hopefully most of it will be done by the end of the summer....Tires, Lift, and Paint are the only high price items i have left on the to buy/do list, but that alone is a chunk o change and it'll be tough to do it all this summer but i should be able to swing it

so did you do anything over this break? dont you just love those rust free trucks like we got? anyways did you have any special tricks to getting that glue off the wheel wells and the floor?

man i have not done anything, other than just general teardown. Only things left to do before i can start doin paint prepwork is to remove the hardtop and the rear bumper, otherwise shes ready to be prepped for paint. I have no clue how to get that glue and **** off....I'm gonna hit it with some gasoline maybe see if it'll eat it off, if not it'll have an appointment with the wire wheel

i have used a chisel and a hammer but mine are prtty dented up. theres got to be a better way. theres still a whole **** load of it left i just painted over it.

hahaha I'm sure I'll end up doing somethin like that cause I'm just bedlinin the inside....the **** wont really show up i dont think

hmm interesting paint, never seen that one before. and holy crap thats alot of crap that come out of the inside. if you find a good way to get all the crap off the floor and wheelwells let us know!

That **** all over the fenderwells and the rear area is gonna drive me crazy. I'm gonna try some paint/adhesive remover stuff i found at a hardware store. I'll let ya'll know how it goes. And yea....you don't realize how much stuff is in there until you take the interior apart.

Great story. My dad and I got everything off and rolled the blazer out so we could sweep the shop out. Well he's backin away from the compressor and steps on my hood sittin on the ground....pop...nice lil dent in the hood that is otherwise straight :(

bummer!! keep the pics coming man! good work so far. it looks like youve got a very solid truck, god bless texas teerucks!

yup. She's solid. only slight problems is the floorpans are cracked where the front seats bolted down....nothing me and a mig welder can't fix. If I can get my truck sold I'll really make some progress cause I'll have the funds to just about finish it

Well this has been a productive week/month. I'll update with pics this weekend, but I've got it as stripped down as its gonna go, and i have the inside cleaned up. The easiest way i found to get all that tar/adhesive stuff off of the fenderwells was to use a grinder with a cup wire wheel and just go to town. It ends up just chewing thru all of that crap. I have the floor/interior cleaned up so its ready for bedlining. I also got all the cracks welded up in the floorpans and all the body holes are welded up. Its coming along pretty nicely.

Right now its sittin on jack stands with the brakes semi-torn apart. Tomorrow my dad and I will finish taking them apart and take the rotors/drums in to be turned and probably buy new pads and a caliper rebuild kit then reassemble and bleed the system. Hopefully that will fix my sticky rear-driverside brake. After I finish the brake system I'll get to start on the body work. Nice thing is everything I've done so far has cost me next to nothing. Buying paint and a gun will be my first major expense. After spring break I will only be able to work on it on the weekends, but I hope to have the body work done in 2 months or so and be ready to prime it. Thats the immediate plans as of right now.

The current and most likely final plan is to paint it navy blue, 4" lift, 35's, open 10b's unless I can find a cheap lockrite for the rear. I will be changing the interior to black, and I am trying to figure out what to do with the front seat belts. I don't know if i've ever seen black seat belts...any ideas?

man just replace them calipers, after core or whatever theyre only 9 bucks each. worth it IMO.

Copied from my local car club forum, sorry for any duplicate pics

1987 Blazer, TBI 350, 4x4, gov-bomb, etc... I've had this since I was 17 and it has gone from a dd, to sittin in the pasture collecting leaves and bugs, to a father son project. It started out in not to bad a shape, but needed some body work from a a collision with a fence  and something the previous owner had done. I havent had much time to do anything on it because of either working all summer and school, or school and work and being in College Station all fall. Anyways, enough talkin...picture time

Now I would post pics of all the emblem holes that were welded up, but there are alot and they are rather pointless. Point of the story, no emblems going back on the body.

Now I would post pics of the complete brake overhaul, but no one cares about that, just know it was done and a pain in the ass

Soon, headers will go on, and it'll go back together. After its together I'll bedline the interior, put the lift on, tires/wheels, and stereo. Its definitely alot for my first project but its been fun so far
