88 K5 Build - Colonel Mustard

A guy on here has a van housing with axles and caps he's going to make a deal with me for that thing. I have a Detroit with carrier sitting in my garage! Sounds like a project to me!

Last night I took the cat over to a buddys house to get some 3/4T joints and driveshafts put in. It all went pretty good. He did all of the driveshaft shortening/welding but I did what I could.

And I took it out to Barnwell Mountain today to see how it would do. Overall I am very pleased with the performance. I have to get some spacers for the rear and put my detroit in asap!! Also some good rock sliders would be a good addition, even though I trashed my pass. side rocker:doah: and a fender and a rear fender. Overall I think it just makes it look tougher!

So the cat has been sitting in the driveway for a few weeks now getting a few upgrades until I can find another tire or 2. Hummer tires dont hold up to what I throw at them however, the mag runflats have proven themselves! this is what i have done since/what is coming soon:
-1 inch body lift, hockey pucks! cheap:waytogo:
-fender trimming
-2 inch rear spacers
and to come:
-ord crossover is sitting on the work bench waiting on some paint and a 2wd box.
-junk yard scores:
-xj shaft
-drivers side battery tray
future mods:
-diy4x winch mount with integrated b52
-hydro assist
-maybe some paint?

any input on what else i should do while its waiting on tires?

I like everything you just said. Even the hockey pucks. Lots of people bash them but they sure seem to hold up just fine.

Thanks!
I dont see why they wouldnt hold up?

Picked up a 2wd box today and a new steering wheel out of a 91 burb.
Plan on drilling the box out this weekend (for when i do hydro assist, dont have it yet)

Then install crossover, 2wd box, xj shaft, steering wheel.
Hell I might even take the column apart and tighten the loose screws while im at it.

I could see where they wouldnt last, I already got em in. Not gonna replace them until there is a need.

I did teardown the steering coulmn and tighten 3 out of the 4 bolts. I got locktite on 2 of them. It wasnt hard, I would do it again. BUT, it was pretty intimidating taking that thing apart for the first time.
I like how solid the column is now, I really thought they were supposed to have a wobble! And I put my new steering wheel in. I have a horn again!

Update

Well I havent posted any progress in a while, things are moving slow thanks to school and work. I picked up a used mix and match set of 39.5 swampers!

I have been working on the steering getting the crossover installed, welding on the patch kit, and hidden underneath there is an ord brace.
I also tapped the 2wd box for when I am ready for hydro assist.

I went ahead and threw some Cat yellow on, it only took seven years to paint!
I think it looks much better than the black/gray/rust/white look it had going....

Crossover shot, Cat theme continues!

I installed an XJ shaft today, it went ok but I had some trouble getting the bolt through on the steering wheel side of the shaft.
I might just pull it out and run a smaller bolt all the way through with a locknut.:dunno:

I went to adjust the shifter linkage, to my surprise, it was too easy.
And since it was too easy, I tightened the bolt down until it sheared right off.:doah:
Seriously?! What did they make those things out of? Play-doh? What a joke!

Put the grill back in today and I plan to put the door handles back in soon.
The little clips are a pain (if you have taken a door handle off you know wht im talking about)
I super glue them to my finger and slide them into place. Sounds stupid but it works.

Plans are to finish swapping the tires to the hummer wheels.
After that, cage work will start.

always liked Cat yellow... had that bit of ocra to it.... made it "tougher" looking than a standard bright Corvette yellow...

I must of sprayed 100 gal's of that color in Imron on all the D9's, etc back in the day....

Thanks fellas,

I had planned on going the flat black route for years until my buddy took my D60 spring plates to his work (a Cat engine shop) and blasted them and brought them back covered in Cat yellow....the rest was history! I guess I fell in love with it at first sight and went with it. I think it has turned out looking great! Cant wait to finish up some things so I can wheel it again...

Cat yellow rocks it. Looks good.

I got it put back together and took it for a test drive yesterday.

It drove pretty good, no death wobble, but the fan is hitting the shroud a little bit, enough to make it sound like something is very wrong with the engine. I will have to trim more.

I need to throw some paint on the topper and put it back on since its getting a little cold out.

Then saturday I will take it to the local off road park and have some fun with it!

I need to get pictures up of the test run.

Broken outer axle stub on the 60:doah:Lost power steering, Bad death wobble on the way home..etc...

Roller are you still planning to buy shafts? I havent bought anything yet for the fix.

Plans for the warmer weather:

Powerplant upgrade/tranny upgrade/TC upgrade
Engine size is undecided, T400 with doubler.

Build all 3 and swap in:D

Cage work will start soon. The weather is getting better!
