88 K5 Diesel - Tranny/Trans Adapter Install

Small setback, couldn't find the right length belt or the ac delete pulley in town, so just ordered those up. My accessory drive is down to alternator and PS pump. May try to figure out how to mount a second alternator, the PS side of the engine will have exactly nothing on it. Not necessary for the moment though, just need the truck on the road and out of the shop so I've got room for hunting season!

Hoping to do a solid push and get this thing more or less buttoned up by the end of the coming weekend. Dash/pedals are the only terrible part left, after that it's just a matter of putting it all together. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly.

Question gents... So those of you that have put 6.5 heads onto a 6.2 block. I have oil lines coming from the previous sender location above the oil filter that feeds the turbo. Didn't even think of it but the exhaust manifolds are quite different on the DS bank, much for rearward. Did you guys swap the exhaust manifolds to the 6.2 on the DS bank and have a crossover custom made, or did you move the lines? I"m leaning toward just pulling the lines, but thought I'd get some input.

6.2

6.5

I haven't done this swap. But having dealt with 6.2 and 6.5 engines, I'd run the 6.2 manifold with a custom crossover pipe. The oil issue should be workable, but the exhaust leaving the 6.5 manifold is heading toward a place where the narrower squarebody frame and the squarebody firewall doesn't leave a huge amount of space. The stock 6.2 location has a huge amount of space comparatively. Either way can work, but why shove the pipe into the frame/firewall corner unless you have to?

This is also the corner where the oil filter goes, pushing the crossover pipe back to 6.5 location is a little bit of extra headache in that spot, too.

I think it largely depends on the passenger side manifold you want to use - Banks, or 6.5 turbo. The factory driver 6.2 pairs well with the Banks passenger side and a forward crossover, and that's what I've run.

Port match while you're at it.

I've put the head in with the 6.5 mani for now just to check it out; it actually looks like a decent amount of clearance. I'm going to take a closer look tonight though, got a little tired last night so called it after I got the head planted. I"m going to be running the 6.5 mani on the PS because I'm going to be running the HX35. The Banks has the wrong flange for the turbo, and it was tight in there even with the small turbo so I'd have to be putting in a flange adapter so may still be tight. If I remember I'll grab a couple pics of the clearance underneath. The only real trouble will be getting the oil fittings in there. Will probably need to have another cooler line made because the hard line piece of the cooler return won't have any room with the 6.5 mani.

Reality is, it's going to be a custom crossover anyway. The original crossover is definitely going to give me problems with the axle there and would need to be modified anyway.

Almost forgot I've got to put a jack under the engine to level it out a bit. It's tight in there right now too because the tranny isn't in, but I'll get it mocked a bit then grab some pics tonight.

Yes, the forward output would be nicer for someone using a banks manifold. I think the 6.5 turbine setup will work well with either manifold.

But everyone knows the real answer here is twin turbines with no crossover pipe. :saweet:

lol! Yep that would be ideal, but I don't need two turbos to replace when I end up sinking it in a hole and sucking in 12 gallons of skunk water!

Unfortunately haven't gone out back yet (except to have a few beer with the neighbours). Hunting season keeps trumping the truck. Was going to do some work tonight, then realized I can sneak out after one more meeting and go for a walk tonight. I'll get to it eventually!

Well this is the age old sad story about a project gone awry. I see my last post was in October of 2016 and much has changed since then. Met a girl, married, two kids... We've been very very busy! Now while we can still run the quads, the 2 seater K5 has been sitting quietly and sadly mid project without completion. So we've hit that point where I've got to put the ol girl up for sale, partly because it's tough getting time work work on it, but mostly because I know it's not going to get the attention it deserves once it's done! Where it sits at the moment in the most recent project is, the 6.2 now has 6.5 heads and is assembled in long block with all the accessories waiting to be mounted. Turbo needs to go on (have the HX35 ready to go) which will also need exhaust attention. The NV4500/NP205 with AA adapter is ready to mount but does need an input bearing retainer. And the pedals need to be modified to accept the new hydraulic clutch (of which I have two just in case). If I had the time, it's probably 3 or 4 days worth of work but if it's going to sell, I'm thinking it might be better to leave it in case someone has other ideas of what they want to go in there.

Anyway, contact me if you want more info, and open to offers because I don't have a clue what to ask for it. I know what's in it, but that's a whole other ball game lol! I'll be posting something into the classified section too, but all the detail is in this thread so thought it was easiest.

Sigh.

By the way I apparently don't know how to edit a post anymore, so I'm not sure how to update the status of the thread!
