New valve springs not needed, got the recommendation for them right off tbichips.com. If it turns out that my springs want to float or bottom out or whatever, I'll get new ones. Until then, we'll see how it goes.

I am not going. My doctor pulled the trump card and said no way. So I guess I can get some work done on the truck! Been working at line haul a lot this last week, hate it out there.

So last weekend I was driving home from Waco and there was a sweet vibration when I was cruising on the highway. I knew I had only limited time before the u joints exploded, and sure enough, the u joint at the out put slip yoke broke apart in semi-violent fashion. I had my tools with me, so I pulled the read drive shaft, and used a red solo cup and duct tape to keep most of the fluid in my transfer case. I have some crappy cell phone pics, but I'm not going to be home untill tomorrow, so they will have to wait. It drove home smooth and uneventful in front wheel drive.

I am not going to fix it. I have the 60 nearly completely torn down, just need to finish banging out the d-side lower kingpin cap. They are a pain in the ass to say the least. My upper kingpins are in awesome condition, so I'm not going to be messing with them. The lower p-side looks good, just yanking everything apart for new bearings, races, and seals.

I can't believe how much the axle shafts weigh!! Which begs the question of how do you remove the axle u joints????? I can't seem to figure it out, it's something I've never done before, and it is confusing as hell.

Once I have everything apart, it's getting sanded and painted, rustbullet will go one first, and then I can beg and bribe people around here to help with the swap. I plan on having the 60 ready to go by next weekend, and then I can clean up the 14 bff so it can go in as well.

The wheels are at texblast right now getting the white paint removed, and then I will be priming and painting as soon as I get them back (should be Monday). Then I can mount the iroks, and get everything situated for a wonderful weekend of axle and associated parts swapping! Once I get my replacement bank card in the mail I am ordering a sye and flange from HAD, and then I will measure for a drive shaft once I get everything in so that I can get that on order too.

A lot of work ahead, kind of slow going due to the fact that my hand is not 100% and that I have to do all this work on my patio, which is cramped to say the least.

This whole thread brings back wicked memories. I was at Hood '04 to '06 and did my swap on base housing. Cant recall how many times the MPs called my 1SG about my "unsafe" vehicle parked in the car port. In all I did the axle swaps, paint, and welding in that car port. I even installed a 220 outlet for my welder on the base house. Those were the days... Now I have a 3 car garage and a full set of tools, and it doesnt seem quite as fun anymore.

The MP even complained about the shell being in the back when I put my soft top on. Asshole.

Alright Mr. Recon, step it up man. I read you got some help coming this weekend. I'm excited to see the progress reports. And where's that blown U joint pic? Ugg what a tease

Axle u-joints are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay easier to replace when you pay the guy at the shop $50 to do it for you. Dropped them off at 12, picked them up at 3 after I went to the doc and got a haircut and ate lunch. Now I have to finish these wheels so I can drop them off with the tires in the morning, that way they are all mounted and balanced and ready to go on when I swap out the 10 for the 60. I am pretty sure I have everything I need to completely swap them out. Trying to think about what I might be missing...

At the T3 Automotive right next to my apartment complex. They are never very busy and they do fast work. They did my u-joints today. I had been screwing with those things for about an hour plus a night for a week. Never even got one cap off. The caps were rusted to the ears, required more heat than I could provide, and 2 guys on the press.

other 2 are drying. never did get them mounted up (obviously) because we massively overslept from being up until 2 drinking beers

got my wheel weights today :wink1:

Good job! Small victories keep the motivation going. I managed to replace my rear U-joint today. Simple job, but I guess my 90 has a much older rear 10 bolt that has a 1310 Spicer yoke, so it also has a bastard/conversion U-joint going from S44 to 1310. Took two trips to the parts store, the second one with a print-out of the conversion joints specs with the Spicer PN#. The guy was able to cross reference the number and even had the joint in stock.

Then I installed the U-joint, and quickly realized the way I put it in I could never grease it...so out it came, turned it around, and re-installed it.

Still gonna count that as a victory, as the rig is mobile again.

The Big Day

So when my brother in law was out here last weekend, we got a bunch of crap done in the prep for the big build day(s). The 60 is ready to go, just have to paint the diff cover. Have the shock brackets cut off the 14BFF, still working on the spring perches. The 14BFF has the hubs and drums yanked too, so it's way lighter and ready for the disc conversion when it gets put in.

I have some buddies coming over on the 2nd and 3rd of July to help with the install of the axles and other random parts I have for it. If anyone is nearby and wants to come out for a fun day of sweating like a mofo in the Texas heat and drinking some cold beverages while working on my Blazer, just let me know.

I'd be into that...'cept it took me 52 hours to drive out there last time. :p:

Next time I am down there I'm staying longer than 12 hours. :doah:

Yeah, 5100 miles in 5 1/2 days was a bit much. Met some great CK5 people and had a blast though. :waytogo:

There is a huge thread about that trip way back in the archives here. Can't remember the last time it was found and brought up to the top again and I haven't been able to find it...

Okay, so disregard PM Q #1 and #2........lol.....(wheels and axles).

I may be in town that weekend - I'll keep you posted. :D

I think I did something wrong or something got screwed up. I prepped the 3rd and 4th wheels identically to the 1st and 2nd wheels, but the paint is rubbing off. Not the whole wheel, but some parts. I have to rub it with my hand and it comes off like a powder. What did I do?

I prepped the wheels by cleaning with soap and water, let dry. Then do a good wipe down with mineral spirits, let dry. Prime and then paint. I used exactly the same primer and paint on all the wheels and these 2 came out weird. Help.

Must have been some oil or grease left on them, or even some brake residue. Best bet is to hit it with a heavy wire brush in those areas. Before soap and water, try using a rag with some gas on it. Then soap and water, then minerals.

How long did you wait between primer and paint? That could've done it too.

The wheels are brand new. Had them all sand blasted, and I've been doing everything identical except some of the times between coats of primer and paint are probably way off. I'm guessing they got some dirt on the primer and/or the time between priming and painting is what did it.
