'89 K5 The Bulldozer

1989 K5, linked, caged, backhalfed, LS3, Hero case, on 42's
Were these stock spicer ujoints? If so the super joint is a good next step. I wheel with buddies who break rcvs on 39s and a 4.3l. Constantly clicking too for how much that grease costs lol.

Nice to meet you! Hope you guys enjoyed BB.

I'm just trying to get some tech chat started because why not. MW doesn't make front axle shafts so that's out. Dutchman, Branik, Cone, Spidertrax, Yukon, Stockers, RCV, amazon special, Costco. lol. Its a KP LP 60 and I keep the turning radius at 39 degrees, so nothing special.

Waiting for my son to roll out of bed so he can come out in the shop and help me rip this thing apart. Then I'll post pics. I'm super curious to see what the 12 year old CTM joints look like. I bet their fine is my gut feeling.

Posted at same time. No these are 4340 35pl yukon shafts with CTM joints. Stock joints would have been destroyed in very short order.

Yeah I have met the limits of stock joint’s already. I’m afraid of the next step in shafts for myself. So basically where you’re at. I’m hot for the spidertrax setup lately.

So many choices. I'm not sure however spidertrax makes a non-bell end stub shaft. I think I remember that shaft not working in the KP style axle. I have no idea what it would take to make it fit.

12 years with the way you wheel, I’d go with the same thing again. I love my RCV’s with 47’s but they suck to work on. I always forget the trick to getting them in and out and end up fighting them .
Did you finish the trail after you broke? I’m guessing no trail pics as usual?

I turned around as I was just a liability then. I've done that trail enough that its no sense in me continuing and just being a liability. I didn't feel like breaking more stuff with just 3 wheel drive.

So far its just normal stub shaft damage. Nothing really out of the ordinary. Smoked the hardcore hub bezel retaining plate and cam pin. Broke and bent all the bezel bolts and smoked the retaining springs.
Spindle is toasted and the needle bearing has become one with dust again.

Teaching Ben how to get the joints out now. This is fun, I'm just like cleaning parts and lifting heavy things. :haha:

You makin him work in the dark?

I destroyed some of the same parts in my Yukon hardcore hubs. Give them a call and they’ll send replacement parts.

Just a stub shaft exploded on the carnage waterfall. My nemesis obstacle. Will rip it apart tomorrow and see the damage.
That’s wild, how are you doing this? I still have stock 1991 axles and u joints on a 10b open front with my truck. :dunno: Idk how it’s been to Moab 5 times.

I gotta be pushing 14 years with my Yukon 4340 shafts. They were installed when the 60 was still in the K5. Just Spicer joints. Obviously I'm a timid driver. Plus it's only been pushed by a big block for about half that time and only about 3 years on 40s. I may need to have the holy man come bless these shafts after the engine swap.... Lord help me!

I've seen more rigs break on this obstacle than all the other ones I run combined. I almost think you gotta nail the time of year so the spring is flowing minimally. I usually run it two or three times a year. Last year we had like a 33% attrition rate. Lol. I think I do drive fairly smart but if you make the call to launch this waterfall, you gotta hit it. Even the crawl line has quite a few spots you can break stuff because you have to wedge yourself in and get the ass end over.

For the parts I could step to 40 spline but then the yokes break. In both 35 spline and 40 spline variants the ring and pinion is part of the fuse as well, even worse for a low pinion axle. This is all for the Kingpin 60. Next option is superduty 60. I would do a steering 14 bolt before that I think. And really, this chassis won't get either of those. I had great service life out of my current parts and things are just getting fatigued.

This was the only pic I grabbed. 3 of us left leading up to the waterfall out of 4. But that other break was not really trail related.
