'89 K5 The Bulldozer

1989 K5, linked, caged, backhalfed, LS3, Hero case, on 42's
I already lost probably 25 lbs in junk parts and random parts. Half the stuff I don't even remember where it came from :haha:
I have to go thru my inventory just to remember what all I have. Sometimes I find stuff and think "I had a good idea putting that in here."

11 Years of abuse and the d60 finally gave up the ghost. New gears and bearings coming. I think inspection times need to be shortened :haha:.

Probably a combination of things but I burned up a pinion bearing lost pinion preload, allowed the pinion to walk away from the gear and broke the gear teeth. That's what it looks like. The biggest question I've always had with the 60's is the case flex. I think so much of the deflection is related to that, and could that have been a contributing factor to the bearing going away.

Its time now to figure out the door situation. Drivers door handle started to have enough of this party and the latch is done with life. Not so much any issue from the doors being dented and pushed in, but more so the age. Its amazing what my doors have lived through. These doors will stay together so I can throw them on if need be.

The plan is to make tube doors and then be able to dzus skins and lexan on. I've got spare doors so I stole the latches off those and will use those skins. They're pretty damn nice but they have speaker cutouts, so I don't feel so bad cutting 'em up.

Making some progress. I have an idea for the mirrors. I've also got an idea for the skin and windows, but right now I'm building them to keep maximum visibility and as light as possible. If I can save 35lbs a Making some progress. I have an idea for the mirrors. I've also got an idea for the skin and windows, but right now I'm building them to keep maximum visibility and as light as possible. If I can save 35lbs a side I'll be happy. My old doors weighed in at 68lbs with lexan.20230707_140206.jpg

They came out pretty good. I'll do the skins and windows when I have a bit more time.
I may also need to get some stock length mirror rods (mine are cut down). I wanted to be able to fold the mirrors totally inside the cab. They fold all the way inside right now, but just barely.

We've been out just about every week this wheeling season. And all but one since the tube doors involved hitting rain on the drive home.

No-fender rooster tails won.

I had envisioned it would be like this:

But its more like this:

So got some skins built for when there is a chance of rain. Still need to work out the window situation.

You don't have to take your brakes off to work on your doors. Brain must be getting water logged.
