'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
I did open up the CDI box that failed to see if there were any indications of what failed.

Not much to see. Almost makes it seem like it's a magic box.

The mirrors need fine tuning. I don't care for the large convex mirrors. They pick up a lot of glare. I don't find them anymore useful that the more moderately sized versions I've used before. I'm going to put these on the larger mirrors the C10 has and get smaller convex mirrors for the crew cab.

I was also reminded of the reason I originally ditched these specific factory mirror bases. They move at higher speeds and every time the door is closed hard. The clamps are tight.

I need to add something to grip the arm tighter. Maybe a thin piece of rubber.

And I'm just gonna add this here:

Saturday before we lost our dog I did have a good day. https://ck5.com/forums/threads/my-dog-passed-tonight.346595/unread

We welded new spring hangers on @Raggedy_Ann's trailer. I even got to play crane operator which I've done a real lift only once before.

Despite putting new springs on the trailer, the axle tubes had been hitting the frame.

After we finished that we worked on the L29 parts truck. We used the crane to pull the bed off.

We knew the fuel pump wasn't running, so we pulled it out. The hose from the pump to the top of the sender was busted and the pump was burned up. We put a rubber hose in since it's only needed for a short time. I had one of my old saddle tank pumps which were direct replacement because the crew cab's efi needed the late 90's high pressure pump.

Then we had some dually fun

I just realized this will be the third donor truck in this build thread. 1985 K30 for the 454, 1995 K3500 for the 4l80e, and now this 1998 C3500 for the L29 (and the 2wd 4l80e will go in the C10). You could even say fourth donor if you count my K5 that originally had the 1 ton axles I'm still running.

Pretty good progress day. Looks like lots of work completed.

Is the L29 getting a little cam action or just going in as is?

@folkenheath has a cam on order for me. I had purchased a cam for the current 454 so we're swapping that for the L29 cam. The other mod I'm going to do is coil on plug using L21 parts to keep it factory. I'll probably use a Terminator for the brains.

I'm on the fence about the headers. I may keep the shorties I have now but I would like long tubes for the torque value. Plus then I could include the shorty headers with the old 454 for a complete swap package. Aside from cost, the long tubes concern me in regards to exhaust clearance around the clocked tcase. I would love to do thru the fender headers since I removed the saddle tanks there's lots of room outside the frame for exhaust.

More torque is always fun. And my long tubes fit fine without issue and don't hang down.

If there is room to squeeze it between the frame and the tcase you are fine because you have enough room to put a small bend in there to clear the t-case with the long tubes, if not, you will need to cross it over or something.

I'm not sure what application they are for as I don't see them under the trucks on the Hedman site but my buddy in Wis has a 496 in his K20 and runs 2 1/8" primary long tube headers. Had to clearance the frame flange like 1/2" to fit them. That was like 20 yrs ago when he built that truck.

I am chasing the torque because we do actually tow with this truck, a 2-1/2 ton camper. I've also thought it would be cool some day to have a little buggy and tow it with the crew cab. That's probably a bit of a pipe dream tho.

1 3/4 would be fine for a torque motor. 1 7/8 would be fine too.

My Hooker Comps fit fine with no frame mods and don't hang too low. But they were made over 12 years ago.

sounds like a good pipe dream :usaflag:

Cam specs?

We blew up the parts truck Saturday.

Even managed to sell the rear axle while we were at it.

Currently I'm only down about $400 on this purchase. I'll haul what's left to the scrap yard and that should gain me another $100 to $150.

What was left of the parts truck above weighed 2,700 lbs! I was surprised it was that much. That netted me $192.

They were forecasting huge snow last night and I wanted to drive the crew cab home. Turns out the stereo got left on for almost 2 months. Needless to say the batteries were dead. I had to come up with a way to trickle charge them overnight with the impending snow. Normally I'd put the charger in the engine bay, but with the louvered hood it's not much protection from the elements. So I got creative with a chair and a tote. It was covered with snow, but I had just cleared it off to check on the status.
