'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
They seem okay but I didn't look at them too close. I'm thinking the metal just absorbed and held a lot of heat and that's why the trailer plug partially melted. All the wiring in the area seems to be okay. I modified the tailpipe a little, dropped the outlet lower and cut a little different angle in the end to try and stop it from happening more.

Got the 454 on the engine stand today. It's a big, heavy beast. I added some support under the balancer because I feel like the 1000# Harbor Freight engine stand is about to collapse. Haha. :yikes:

Jegs has a $25 engine cradle with casters I might get to use instead. It's just a b*tch to move the motor around on the stand.
I have a horseshoe shaped base for that engine stand, youre welcome to it.

Heads are 70lbs each :yikes:

Intake manifold is around 50lbs...

It was unsettling rolling mine around and I think I have a better stand.

Does it bolt to the engine mount bosses?

The thing that I'm really trying to figure out is rolling the motor over to pull the pan. I can take some weight off with the intake manifold, water pump, and accessories. Oh I I suppose I could pull the exhaust manifolds as well. Sounds like that might drop at least 100#.

It just the lower. I've been known to put cylinder heads on the legs when I roll over rat motors

I'd look for a better stand if you want to roll it over on the stand with the heads on.

Just use your center on this stand. It's done rat motors before

Okay. Let me see how I feel after I remove the iron intake and accessories.

I really like the geared engine stands with the handle to crank to turn over the engine. My last BBC was on a wimpy stand and when sitting I had to stand a block of wood under the crank snout to keep it from sagging. LOL They are not bad to spin with heads on just recommend two people so it doesn't get away from you when all that weight comes over center.

Yeah, I looked at those but I tell my self I probably won't need the stand again so I shouldn't invest in an expensive engine stand. Bearing in mind it has been the last time I'll use this stand I think 3 or 4 times now. But really I shouldn't need it again.....

I used the same stand with my 454. Sketchy to say the least and rolling it over by myself made me more than nervous! :eek1:

Never had a problem though. Actually I just remembered that I have used that stand 25 years ago with another 454 I put into my old truck. Good memories. :thumb:

Works but a bigger better stand would be nice for sure!

Engine stands are great for holding an outboard engine otherwise I find them to be a waste of shop space.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if I came home one day to my TBI 350 sitting on the floor instead of the stand...

I think about that when I'm messing with the motor. If this stand fails will it just break suddenly or slowly collapse. Hopefully the latter.

I did get a box with some new goodies today.

I have the same manifold, make sure inspect the runners really well. I was looking at mine and found this barely stuck in one of the runners. I was able to remove it with a flick of a fingernail.
