'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
Blazer tank should fit its 31 or 24.

Mine fits behind my axle basically it is up higher but if it was lower it would not hit it. My frame is cut off at the rear springs. My hitch is modded cut it to fit in between the frame. Stock one would still work I think, hitch that is.

I've often thought something like this would be really nice. These are pricey, but you could run this as a primary tank easily. The combo toolbox/fuel tanks they have are pretty sweet. We used to have one in a work truck that used to log a bunch of highway miles.

Yes I've thought of those too. Ktmoutfront linked one too but many of those say diesel only. Not sure how big of a deal that is.

Diesel only is likely a DOT thing because of crash testing ( or lack of).

Gas explodes, diesel doesn't.

Space wouldn't bother me as long as it's roughly the same footprint as the current tool box.

I could get really crazy and put a 26 gallon Blazer tank in the back and keep the saddle tanks and use them to replenish the K5 tank. Then I wouldn't even have to worry about putting a filler neck in for the K5 tank. Just fill the saddle tanks and run fuel to the K5 tank. That is assuming you get get a 26gal K5 tank with the baffle as I've only ever heard of 31gal tanks in the TBI trucks. My 84 K5 originally equipped with 6.2L had a 26gal tank but not baffled. Imagine carrying 66gal of fuel capacity. :saweet:

At this point the fuel tanks are kinda back burner. Honestly after Blazer Bash, I won't be running any difficult trails until the Rubicon in '19. Only current source of irritation with the tanks is the fuel level is WAY off in one of them.

On another note, I'm debating about running ATF or gear oil in the Magnum/205. I know either is supposed to be acceptable. I like the idea of ATF since I'm running an auto. On the other side it seems weird to put ATF in a gear box. Any other thoughts.

I wouldn't even consider the 26 gallon, the size difference is next to nothing in comparison to the 31.

I ran ATF in my 205's without the crawl box in case the fluids mixed between the auto and the 205. NWF recommends gear oil in their box so that's why I run gear oil in both boxes. If I could run ATF I would run that instead.

Magnum instructions say that either ATF or gear oil is acceptable. Chris said they have a couple at ORD with gear oil and 1 with ATF and there isn't any detectable difference between them.

I know GM ran ATF in the 205's, did they ever run ATF in the 208's or 241's?

Yeah, what he said. The NP208 and 241 use ATF. That's the only cases I've known in my little offroading life.

I wonder why NWF recommends gear oil then.....the planetaries are obviously OK with ATF. I would have ran ATF in both boxes for simplicity and in case the fluids leaked between them.

Edit- and now that I think about it, I remember ATF being in the 241 I gutted for parts.

Could be they only tested with gear oil so that's what they are comfortable recommending. The big bearing 205 I have is an 80 with a slip yoke so I'm curious to see what's in it.

I was looking at getting one but was not sure how to make it work with the in-tank pump. Funny you posted that because I was just thinking about the fuel tanks and improving them yesterday.

It does not work... I suppose if you wanted to shorten up the sending unit tube, find a different fuel pump that can be adapted, and use some fittings you could but I'm giving up on the idea.

sometimes KISS is the best approach. The K5 tank baffle works fine, why reinvent the wheel?
