'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
I just got email confirmation it was delivered late last week, and I haven't heard any more.

Any word on the ECM?
@6872xtc called Holley Tech this morning and it's shipping out today. I shipped it on 9/24 so it's about a 3 week turn around. Not great, but not horrible. Yes a little inconvenient but I'm not going to complain since it was still out of warranty and they fixed it anyway.

Honestly I'm so tired of being pestered about how long things take here at work that I've adopted the "it will take as long as it takes" attitude in my personal life. I can't control how other people feel about how long things should take, but I can at least not add the stress of being the same way myself for things I'm doing. When people want their custom sign in some ridiculously short time frame, I feel like saying "this isn't Amazon Prime Signs." But I digress.

I used to work in a print shop so I can attest to peoples expectations on turn-around time.

A coworker at the time found a sign similar to this, and it's spot on.

Yeah that goes with a saying I heard. There are 3 variables; quick turnaround time, low cost, and high quality. Catch is you can only pick 2.

Quality is my biggest pride but it really doesn't go with either of the other 2 options very easily.

Thanks for the update.

And I definitely hear ya about work stuff wearing a guy down. Apparently the circus is still here..
Kinda makes the bright colors on the trucks fitting..

I work in the quality field. I carry this on my phone and like to show people.

When you tell people the lead time, they will usually say something along the lines of how good it is to be so busy. I tell them "yeah, unless you're the one wanting your sign up anytime soon." :doah:

I don't know, I feel like a lot of them problems I've had recently - front and rear seals leaking badly and the ECM failure - all happened shortly after towing the camper up a couple of passes on the 95F day this summer. The engine would get up to 240F and I would let it cool back down to 200F and start all over again. Maybe next time I should pullover and cool down around 225F instead. That and not pull the camper up the passes on a 95F day.

I can't remember, did your new e-fan setup help with the cooling issues you were having while towing? Or did you even get to test it out yet?

It surprises me that you were having cooling issues. With this tuned 8.1 towing the slide-in camper, and my blazer behind that with gear/tools/spares, and even a ford d60 thrown on the trailer (we were estimating about 18k GVW) and mine never got above 190* once. Stayed cool as could be the whole time towing, even in 85-90* heat. And again, all I have is a 9-blade mechanical fan with a BBC radiator and shroud on there.

I will say though, I have heard stories of guys who try to tow with only e-fans and no matter how much their fans are rated for, it still can't seem to keep up with what a mechanical fan can push. Lots of guys I've heard say driving around like normal the e-fans do just fine, but it's kinda hard to get better air flow when towing then with a standard mechanical fan. Just food for thought I guess

I did not have a chance to test out the bigger fans. The EFI failed right after the 1 test drive we did and it wasn't towing anything. Now it's buttass cold so I'll be blocking off the radiator for the winter. :surepal:

Wait, you're saying 95°F is hot? no comprendo, that sounds like a brisk fall day to me.:D

But seriously, you shouldn't be having cooling issues at that temperature, even when you're towing if you have a setup that's at least as good as factory.

I noticed in my truck search a couple years back when I was looking for the 2014 Silverado, that I sold, that even now, all the HD trucks, gas or diesel, ran mechanical fans.

Dirtymax's have always had a belt driven fan and the later ones have a computer controlled fan clutch vs thermostatic. The 3/4 ton gassers still run a mechanical fan. Only the 1/2 tons went away from the mechanical fans.

If the larger electrics don't work, I'll go mechanical next. As I mentioned when I put them in, at this point for my setup trying the bigger electric fans from factory applications was a cheaper option.

I was actually kinda wondering if the EFI could have been not functioning properly at that point leading up to the complete failure. I also had made some tweaks to richen the targe AFR but didn't get a chance to try those either.
