Ran across a FB ad for a 14BFF, pics check out, but I have red flags. Guy is asking $150 for the unit. Talking with him he says it’s 100% but doesn’t know ratios or locker status. I have some red flags $150 sounds cheap as heck, he says it’s 100% he’s only changing it because it’s under a 1/2 ton and he is going back to 6 lug.
Other than pulling the rear cover and visually inspecting and rotating everything making sure it moves freely and the hubs aren’t loose whatelse should I treat as a hard pass when I go to pick this up?

$150 is a good deal for a good 14B axle IMO.
Just keep in mind that a gov lock carrier will not allow you to drop in a detroit or other drop in lockers if you want to go that route later. If you pop the cover off you can count the crossbars, 3 will indicate a gov lock carrier and 4 is open carrier which will accept a detroit, yukon, etc. Make sure you grab the pinion and check for slop.

I actually worked on Barney, motor is completely ready to come out now, I have a motor to go in. It started life as an IMCA 602 crate (350hp) I’m excited. I have a lot of irons in the fire but I don’t need much to make this thing go again!
The slowest motor swap ever is gaining momentum! I’m forcing myself to start bolting shit together and seeing what happens! Today I finally felt I’d made enough progress to warrant a build thread bump. I snatched the busted and disgusted TBI350 out and dropped in the crate motor. I’m so pumped to have it bolted down and can’t wait to start bolting accessories on and trying to make this dude run again.
I’m not sure what direction I plan to go for fuel, I left the HEI distributor in the crate for now and I’m doing some looking into using it with the modded TBI I bought from SPR performance. Any opinions are welcomed at this point, I don’t want to run the emissions stuff, I want headers, it’s tempting to just slap a regulator and carb on this dude and be done with it.

Do you have the parts to get it running on a carb? Maybe you can do that and get the break-in done, see how it runs and then swap it to TBI later?

It’s already been broke in so no worries there, I have everything but a carb and regulator to make it run on a carb. Well, exhaust too but that’s already decided I just haven’t ordered the headers.

Eastbound and Down
Decisions were made, stuff should be here soon and I’m pumped. I need to pump the old gas out and finish bolting on accessories and install this stuff when it comes in.
I put in a couple hours after work today, mostly just tracking down stuff that’s scattered around the shop and dealing with some snags, one of which is a broken bolt in the upper left of the water pump it looks like it’s EZ out time.
I did notice that not having the front accessories on will make dropping the headers in a lot easier so maybe it was a helpful set back that kept me from bolting all that stuff on and having to take it back off? I didn’t have any easy outs so I called it a night.
Does anyone have any advice on what I can pull out of the truck that’s TBI specific and won’t affect any other accessories? My thinking was pull the chip and anything attached to that wiring harness but I wasn’t sure if other things like lighting or anything was tied into it so when I have time I’ll be doing some searching.

Got the bolt out today with some extractors and a lot of patience, I didn’t even have to break out the sweat words thankfully. Now we’re waiting on the Summit delivery to install the headers and go back together with the rest!

Started stripping the TBI wiring off the truck, this diagram has been a great help with making sure I’m not removing something that I actually need. I was really hoping that the harness would fight a little less in the removal but we’re plugging along with it.
Been plugging along slowly, I gave up on saving the TBI harness, I hacked more at it then I wanted but it sped the process up immensely and if needed I left plenty of leads so it could be used again if ever wanted. Once I got past the TBI removal the accessories fell right into place, I’m going to do my best to find a spacer to at least attach the front header bolt to the P/S pump, the back one I don’t see being usable with the header tube being in the way. I had to stop short of installing the P/S pulley due to my not having an installer on hand so next time I get to it I’ve got to install that, the water pump and belt then the accessories are buttoned up.
I got a wild hair and hooked the jump box to it before I left and to my delight it turns over, battery voltage to the coil wire is there, lights worked, I’m getting stinking close!! I need to plumb the fuel, mount the carb, replace the T/V cable (I broke it removing the throttle body) and then we’ll be ready to try and fire and see what else I’ve forgotten/missed!
