'90 K5 - Project Betty - LS3 Swap for a DD/Offroad/Utility Build

Thanks.
You still may have to add some type of sending unit depending the type of gauges you use. They may not work with the ones for the computer.

Wiring Harness

So here is what the wiring harness looks like. Does anybody have a diagram or pic of the stock routing/position of fuse box?

Also, there is inputs for the fans and fuel pump. Would there be a benefit to running the fans off the PCM vs their stand alone harness? Or the fuel pump vs the old harness?

I purchased the same fans as Teck

(these http://www.jegs.com/i/Flex-a-lite/400/295/10002/-1 )

because the ones I purchased prior overlapped the middle inlets by a half inch or so (these http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performance+Products/555/52140/10002/-1 ).

Your right, they require the same inputs as your setup. Really should have drilled and tapped that oil pressure sensor before I put the engine in. Any other locations that would be easier to install now that the engine is in?

Also, is there no after-market item that can convert the signal of one sensor into something these older gauges can understand? Seems like there would be a market for it.

Dash Cut Out

After taking a look at Teck's build, I really felt like I was half assing some of this. Having said that, this project will never come close to his, but I at least want to make sure I don't look back with a bunch of regrets.

That being said, I knew I would never get the wiring to look suitable (or at least in a reasonable time frame) without taking that dash out. What I didnt know was that (at least to my knowledge, it cannot be removed without cutting the front (near windshield) from the tub. I was going to do it eventually (didnt really wanna do it now bc of my time crunch), but I plunged in anyways.

Radiator Compare

Here is the new radiator from AFCO vs the stock unit.

As for the oil pressure you just have to unbolt the plate and remove it to drill and tap it.

Duh! Thank God I have somebody looking out for me.

That's a textbook case of arbitrarily placing constraints on a problem (the old 3 tooth picks to make a shape example)

I have been thru this so it not a problem to help you with what i have learned.

Just ask and i will try to help.

I do extend the ofter to come look at how I did mine if it will help make things easier for you.

I would love to come see your build one day. It's truly amazing.

Right now I am stuck in a loop. I am trying to decide where to place my PCM's, but I do not have my new dash designed. The design of my dash depends upon the PCM placement. So I punted and went to the pedal and hit another road block. The pedal the came with engine is so much shorter (the linkage) and does not stick out hardly at all. Will upload pics later.

I went through your DBW install and a couple of others. I am going to have to get a different lower pedal assembly to even begin building a custom bracket like you did.

Here is where I mounted mine. I used the mount from an 07 sub that hanges under the battery.

PCM Locations

I think I am going to mount the engine PCM, tranny PCM, and amp for subwoofers in a covered tray in my new dash.

A look at the tranny wiring harness. There is going to be more wiring than I was initially led to believe, however it does have a lot of nice features like paddle shifters, etc. I wish I would have known that before I bought my new steering wheel (w/o paddle shifters).

DBW Pedal Dilemma

So the DBW pedal that comes with the engine is a swing and a miss. Way too short and to far in. A custom bracket would have to relocated it 3-4" from the firewall at minimum.

I am looking to get a new lower pedal assembly to make the mount more do-able.

What year model/type is your computer?
Mine is a E38 so I used a pedal for an 09 express van because it is straighter then the truck pedal. You just have to have a pedal that match your computer. I have a book that lists years vehicles and computer that GM used. I used that the van pedal because it fit with the lease modification to make it fit. I have an 07 express van that is how I figured out the van pedal would work better.

Are you doing the DIY4X dash?

As far as your question on the fans, definately have the ecm trigger them. I see that as being far more reliable than a stand-alone harness/temp switch.

Since you're going this far into the truck and wiring, I think you might be yards ahead if you just replace the whole harness with a universal

I am going to build something similar to a DIY4X dash, but I would like it to have more pieces (built of individual plates so I can interchange plates (if I change radio deck size, gauges, **** one up on accident), also easier to get a wires in the future). Also I want to have a console built into the dash.

As far as the universal harness, you mean just for the lights and what not? What would be the upside over replacing the original?

Computer is GMPP# 19258268 and accelerator 10367117 (Accelerator Pedal Assembly)

an the rest if anybody cares

From what I can find online, these pedals were used in CTS' 04-08 (the smaller engine version)

can you take a pic of it, not sure if you have a E67 or an E38 ECM yet from my looking.

not sure what year your ECM is from, but I have read you can use a 98+ diesel dbw pedal on pre-2005 ecm's.
Do a google search for 8.1 into an 88 quad cab by Gary Puls, its a pdf file with lots of info on the diesel dbw pedals. thats the route i'm going.

PCM Year

Not exactly sure how I would determine the PCM year, since I do not believe this unit was ever put into a production vehicle.

I do not want to spend the $ on another pedal. I am really hoping I can just put a different arm/foot pedal assembly onto the electronic portion.
