'90 K5 "Project Sanity" Sold 7/5/2018

Original winch on the truck wasn't wired when I got it, couldn't find any remnants either. Aside from the winch, the rest hasn't been messed with other than me adding a stereo which didn't change the key-off draw that it had from the day I got it. Ironically, from an electrical standpoint this truck is the least messed with square body I've ever owned.

The little white cube is the horn relay (thanks for chiming in Russ) and plugs into a block near the steering column.

It appears I have everything plugged back in now, gonna buy a new battery tomorrow and fire it up, maybe get a few other things taken care of. Hopefully if Russel does have time to help me out some more we can finally trace down the draw and get it taken care of. If not I will run a night switch...

prolly some hack got to working on it when you weren't around, and foked it up...

Alt is brand new...not a reman. It's pretty low on my suspect list. Starter is a complete unknown though. Might just pick up a new style gear reduction starter for it.

Dave, your work on this truck is some of the only work I fully trust. :waytogo:

Been thinking traction aids, and thinking Tru-Trac rear, and E-locker up front with 4.88's. Moderate wheeling at best, I think this combo would give me the good street manners and do decently off-road. Also, would be awesome in snow by not activating the E-locker. Thoughts?

Do you plan on sticking with 35s? If so, I feel like 4.56 might be a better choice. Other than that, I like it.

Keeping the 10 and 12. Likely Superior or similar for shafts.

I think the 4.88's will be better, leaves me the option of 37's later.

Currently I just don't use overdrive and in drive on the freeway it's turning 2130 rpm with the 35's. With 4.88's it'll be turning the same rpm's in overdrive, but should have a ton more snap at lower speeds.

I like the choice of lockers Rene'
Luke has run the tru trac and its what I will get for my CC someday

Yeah, trying to keep focused on civil road manners this time. I think selectable up front will also be a good way to go...decent in snow/ice on the road, able to go fully locked if in a tougher spot off road. :dunno:

I can honestly say that I LOVE the True Trac in my 'Burb. On deep snow and ice, no worries. Totally transparent and predictable. The only thing to stop it is an empty fuel tank. :thumb:

prolly some hack got to working on it when you weren't around, and foked it up...

Russel came over today, turns out the "hack" was me. I guess when I plugged the "key hot" wire for the tach in I focked something up. Russel got it sorted. :doah:

It's back together, new battery and key off draw is now under 5 mA, which would be radio memory. Fired it up for the first time in almost a year and a half. Sounded good, now it's time to move onto other things.

Yeah, it was damn cold. Fired up the torpedo heater about two hours before Russel showed up. I think we got the garage to the -5 C range, which was 20 degrees warmer than outside. Still cold though, and hand tools were still brutally cold. Overall it was tolerable, until we got back from lunch and decided to load my doubler up. That was 100% outside work and I was chilled to the bone by the time we were done.

Still good to see the doubler go to someone who I know will use it.

No tits required. Russel overlooked my obvious lack in the gazonga catagory and showed up anyways. :)

Nice! I always thought Russell might end up with the trans tcase combo.
Or at least know somebody that would buy it.

Yeah well...not quite the same deal you got on the BBC, but still rather good. At least Russel will use it. It didn't fit my build or intentions for this truck at all, and was just sitting there taking up space.

OK, time for some updates. The doubler I sent Russel's way came back as a 2006 5.3 LM7 with a 4L60e behind it, plus a SF 14 bolt with an ARB and 5.13's.

Trading stuff with Russel has been quite fruitful. A week or two later Russel and I got to talking and I mentioned the 5.3 was gonna go into the Blazer...so we swung another trade for the 350 TBI and 700R-4 that was in my Blazer. I definitely didn't need them anymore, but Russel had a friend with a Jeep that wanted a small block. In return I'm getting a 79 Ford high pinion D60 front. I may end up doing a bit more trading for Russels Trail ready beadlocks and 37's.

So, update is that the engine is now out, and running really well in someone else's Jeep. I figured before throwing the 5.3 in I'd do some cleaning and painting. So I got a few pics of the engine bay now. Not what I call show quality, but looks tidy enough.

Next up is cleaning up the 5.3 a little and physically get it into the truck. Russel is gonna help me with the wiring.
