'90 K5 "Project Sanity" Sold 7/5/2018

If your gonna Shrink wrap them anyways dont use crimps solder the connections. even with shrink wrap crimp connections can still corrode ...... I dunno I'm kinda weird I consider crimps to be a temporary fix.

There are some Connections that Napa carries that the ends screw together and are weather tight and reusable they are more spendy but they work awesome and are reusable and they have virtually no resistance

I have used "wire nuts" <i know, they are for houses and kind of crude, but I have had better luck with them than "crimp" terminals..a little RTV on the exposed ends and theyseem to work as well as solder does,I find solder corrodes too, sometimes quickly!..those NAPA terminals are pretty neatI have seen them too!..

Its good to know the tailgate lock cylinder is not exactly "fun" to change--I tried my key in the old gate and it works, but the window dont roll down--so the lock cylinder works, but the switch dont,or its unpligged or something...rather than mess with my "new" gate,I think I'll let it be and just use the switch on the dash!---

I also have a ring of keys, all GM ones I got from a friend who ran a junkyard, theres about 200 keys on it,and so far I have had only ONE truck I couldn't find a key that fit it!..maybe I'll get lucky and find one that'll fit that tailgate!..:D

Not to clutter up your thread Rene but this is concerning.

Diesel4me, Solder should not be corroding that fast unless you are using acid flux solder. That is the solder used for plumbing. It should NEVER be used for electrical connections. The acid eats at the connection and looks like corrosion.

You should be using Rosin core Solder. It is specifically designed for electrical connections.

Cheers,
Rufus

I will be using crimp connectors that have the outer shink stuff. I've had good luck with them in the past...and this isn't some uber build or resto. We're talking tail lights here. :haha:

LOL sorry, I grew up around big trucks ( and all there trailer wiring gremlins ) and then 6yrs in the AF , and the last 6yrs working on Power plants........ well anyways I've become bit of a snob when it comes to wiring

I get the same way with welding and fab...

The Crew Cab project will be done with more 'correct' procedures. :D

Rene

I usually take those crimp connectors, cut the plastic off them, crimp the two pieces of wire with it, solder it, then use heat shrink tubing that has that glue goop stuff in it to seal it right tight

Can we get over the electrical minutia now? Trust me I'm gonna find the problem wires, use some pretty cheap crimp connectors and move on to better things. :haha:

Don't forget the run the tailgate power through an electron sorter, so that all your voltage is in the perfect orientation for that window.....

OK, sorry....I'll take that 3-day ban now.

:haha:
:usaflag:

Rufus,I agree ,solder should NOT corrode that quickly, but here in the salty new england area it does!..and yeah,I am using rosin core solder on wires,I know the difference between that and acid core!..I dont use plumbing/radiator solder on wires, not if I have a choice anyway!..

OK,enough about wires,back to Rene's build!..:D

Well, had a day off today and had a few bucks to throw at things. I replaced all the tail light, front turn signal and marker lights. Added some premium halogen headlights, patched the tail light wiring, did the oil and filter change and installed a new 195 F T-stat.

Then I shovelled the worst of the garabge out of it, got a one day permit and headed for the emissions testing place. Everything was going great until I was a few blocks away and out of the blue it develops a miss and a stumble. :doah:

Yeah...I got time for this.

I figured I'd start with the easy solution first. I threw $40 of fresh 87 octane in the tank and beat it like a rented mule for a while. :D Damned if it didn't clear right up and start running like it should! So, feeling a little better about things I pulled into the emissions testing place and got in line.

It's about a 15 minute wait, and I'm about 3 feet off the bumper of the Mercedes in front of me. My windshield is dirty and I'm bored so I try the windshield washer for the first time. The '90 has the squirter on the wiper arm itself, and unbeknownst to me the passenger squirter hose was not connected. The squirter tube is actually aimed forward...so when I tried 'wash' this 10 foot stream shot forward onto the back of the Mercedes I was behind. :haha: It looked like the Blazer was having this huge piss on the car in front of me...

Anyways, I pull it forward finally and the first prob is the guy can't read the VIN through the grime/dirt. I wiped the worst of it away and we move on. Gas cap is fine, they never even checked for a Cat.

I pull it onto the dyno and chew my nails for a few minutes while they run it through the test.

It passed, and was right at the low side of the average readings for that vehicle. So, it's now E-tested and insured.

Oh, and i re-connected the squirter. :p:

I don't think he noticed, but I was laughing my ass off! it was a real "Herbie" moment...:haha:

Definitely killed the boredom waiting in line!
