Random but I'd be interested to see what that paint job looked like in it's entirety.

I know it seems funny, but this is what my current fuel door looks like:

I have a box side to work with, but it's from an 8 foot box, and it has no fuel door area seeing as it was from a '77 pick-up. This fuel door will save me a ton of time and aggravation...

I'd also like to see the whole 'burb that fuel door came off of. What a crazy paint scheme!!
 
Yeah. I kinda dig a lot of the old school "out there but not insane" paint jobs.

Do you remember back the 70's van sceen custom paint jobs? (not sure how old you are?) If you don't there were crazy custom paint jobs on vans back in the day. Some were god aweful, but some were bad ass insane paint jobs. Not to mention the full custom interiors too. I always dug that stuff as a kid. I want a cool paint job on my K5. Not going the drab thing or flat black, but a cool paint job that stands out. Just don't see that these days anymore.
 
Hahaha, I'm circa 78 so no, but I do know of them from the literary shudders everyone at Hot Rod and other car mags make about the van craze of the 70's.

I know of what you speak, there used to be an old van with a diamond shaped window, rusty side pipes, big and littles, and a star shooting down the side sitting on the side of the road in my home town.

Not my thing, but I can appreciate the "out there"-ness of it.
 
A buddy and I were looking at a short wheel base Chevy van the other day and saying we should bring back the shaggin wagon hahahaha. I was too young for that craze but I always dug them.

Hmmm, well, here's the good side, or what's left of it. A friend of mine had this as his family hauler and actually liked the paint scheme. I just kept razzing him about it, then his wife was driving it and got nailed by a van running a red light.

I'll be waiting to see how you pull off cutting down the long box to make patch panels :D The old busted up sheet metal came off really easy, just a few spot welds and a cutting disk. I'm going to cut off the tail light area from my 8 foot box and weld it on during the week, but I'd be interested to see how you match the angle from the bottom of the box side to the wheel opening...

Yeah, she took the hit in the RF corner, with 2 kids in the truck, and everybody came out fine but the 'burb. Both framerails are drastically bent to the left, but obviously, it's been useful to a few people for parts.:D
 
About all you can really ask is for them to carry you through a bad accident.
 
Started dealing with this ugliness yesterday...

Got the bad stuff cut out, cleaned up the inner stuff, and like the drivers side I had to graft the lower part of the inner wheelhouse. Wire wheeled it, a coat of primer and three coats of satin black. Should keep the rust at bay for a while...

Same basic idea as the driver's side...except I had to add a new gas door assembly. Also had to add a smaller section at the very rear which incorporated the tailight area.

Got the main piece hung and tacked somewhat...

Last section clamped in place, you can see the area at the bottom that Russ mentioned. The angle is different on a K5 than an 8 foot box. Pretty easy fix really.

All fit up, just needs a bunch more full pen tack welds and finish work.

For the bottom, seeing as there is no crease or body line I was able to use some wide vise grips and roll the yellow part up and in. I started a few inches back from the rear wheel opening and just rolled it a little more and more as I went towards the rear. Then I finalized it by tacking the three pieces together. I think it turned out pretty close.

Hard to get a good money shot...but it's damn straight looking down the side of the truck.

Damn man, nice work.

Ever considered just cutting that bottom lip out? I know you're doing more of a restoration than a modification but after seeing how mine just holds dirt, snow, crap, and road salt down there I'm pretty sure I'm going to trim mine out after the rear wheel well and before the front wheel well. Doesn't do anything but "look right".

Both areas are easy to rinse out, so I'll probably leave them alone. I will be looking at a inner mud/crap/salt deflector in front of the rear tire though. This is a common bad spot on K5's and is an asshole to fix (compared to hanging a partial box side)

Worse yet, it leads to the lower seat belt mount area rotting out.

I have thought about some kind of mud flap/deflector thingy. I was thinking maybe the thin plastic cutting board material...but how to mount it?

Why yes I will be...I'll be painting over it with extreme prejudice, just like the rest of the truck. :p:

Of interest to you specifically. That whole structure on the backside of the fuel door area...must be Suburban specific. I ended up trimming it down to the bare minimum just like the messed up original looked like.

Odd, but maybe it's intended to support the fuel door area, since it's on a much larger panel on the burbs.:dunno: I would think a fairly small bracket would have been more than sufficient, but I don't work for GM.:rolleyes:
