'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

Colby the 1410 is the only "angle" upgrade from the stock 1310 joint out of the joints you listed.

The prices really arent too bad for the upgrade besides the fact you have to do the new yoke on the driveshaft.

I clearanced both my yokes at the front pinion and still bind that joint up from time to time. I plan to upgrade to 1410 as well. Get the pinion yoke with u-bolts vs straps if you change it.

I have broken a ujoint bolt on a rear axle yoke replacing a driveshaft before that I had just got balanced with new u joints. It was deep enough in the hole that the bit held straight. I was able to drill the hole and tap it again cleaning the metal out of the threads. Sounds improbable but is not impossible. I spent like 5 hours that day taking my time and drilling really really carefully.

I have seen u joint bolts from spicer be longer than originals and that is why I broke one. It went in fine except the last 1/8 inch got tight and I was like eh it's only a couple more turns and i broke it like cheese. Needless to say I put the original bolts in after that.

I called up my driveline builder yesterday and asked them to bring in a 1350 yoke for me. I decided to go this route because it will match the rear, meaning I only carry one extra joint. Should arrive tomorrow.

I'm really itching to get out into the desert or the mountains on Saturday for some light wheeling. So I'll take care of the driveline/yoke on Friday, along with installing some rear shocks. :D

My bump stops arrived in the mail, so I need to get those put in. And, I need to double double tripple check my measurements so I can get them installed properly. However, I'm needing the front driveline in first before I can take those measurements because I can't seem to get up my bigger flex-test rocks at the church where I'm doing all this work without 4x4. It seems my suspension has loosened up since I first put i in there, because now, when I drive up that 2' rock in the previous flex pictures, the suspension isn't needing to compress/droop as much. I'm about an inch and a half shy of full droop/compression.

Got my new yoke and u-joint today. :woot: Should be able to do some light snow wheelin on Saturday. We're doing some snowshoeing in a designated wilderness area, and there's a back access road. Should be plenty of snow, too, as we just got a bunch this week. Kinda. A bunch compared to this year's minimal snow fall.

So did you check to see if the yoke can be swapped without problem, as in checking for the proper torque?
I did that once on a 12 bolt which has a crush sleeve and when I tightened it too much, I burned the pinion bearing in a couple of months.
I don't know what the D60 has but I would check if I were you.

Most dana axles (Mostly the newer stuff stuff uses crush sleeve) use shims to adjust pinion preload. All he has to is bolt the new yoke on without effecting preload.

Yes, this Dana 60 uses shims, not a crush sleeve. ;) Good to see you back, Issaam!

Today I installed my new yoke, my driveline, and picked up some shocks and installed them in the rear.

I went from a 1310 to a 1350 yoke. The Dana 60 pinion nut was a 1 1/4" nut, which is odd, because everyone told me it was a 1 5/16. However, I do have a Dodge Dana 60, so I don't know if that changes things. :dunno: Whatever, it was an easy swap, thanks to owenst7 having the sockets I needed.

I was going to try to use the rear shocks from the green truck, but after pulling them off this morning and measuring them to find out that they're just simply a couple inches too short, I didn't want to run them. The shock mounts on my other truck have cracked, and I think it's due to the shocks always being the limit strap. I could see myself installing these and then forgetting about them to find my '90's frame cracked in the future. So, I picked up a set of 14" travel Bilstein 5100s fro the rear. That's WAY more travel than I need. However, I figure this way I have some 14" travel shocks so that I can build that engine hoop/cage thing around the shocks, and then just get another set in the future. :D That's WAY down the road though.

So, with that said, I'm going wheelin tomorrow. :woot: About damn time!!

Fun day today. We drove the Hunter Lake Trail, which apparently is typically impassable at this time of year due to high snow level. However, this year the snow was only about knee deep at the lake.

First impressions: The 5.13 gears are bomb! :saweet: Sucker crawls fantastic! I also forgot how much I love these SSR tires. Truck did really great.

However, I had 2 problems:

First, my driveline angle on the front is too sharp, and the CV yoke was binding. :doah: I'm going to try clearancing it a little bit and see if that helps. This would only happen when I got on the throttle, so I'm going to check my tranny mounts to make sure it's not flexing upwards under throttle. I'm wondering if I should've just gone with a non-CV shaft. :dunno: Anyway, that was a bummer and made it such that we really could only crawl SLOW.

Second, I didn't take "bouncing" into account when measuring for my rear shocks, so they're a bit too long and I bottomed them out a couple times. That really pissed me off. So, again, the slower than necessary speed was a must. To account for it, I'm going to run bump stops back there, and I'm going to drop my axle-tube shock mounts down a touch to make it better.

Otherwise, I was real pleased. :D The suspension works really really well, and I think I'll be able to let out my limit straps on the front a little bit.

Also, "alexsdad" joined us on this trip as a passenger. Was real nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of while trying to diagnose my problems.

A short distance from the trailhead, looking back towards Reno:

At this point, we ran into "owenst7" coming back down from a short overnight trip to the lake. :)

I didn't take pics of his truck, because I never did ask permission and I try to pay attention to that kind of thing.

This is "owenst7's" girlfriend's dog.

Cool rock formation further up the trail, near the lake.

Back at that cool rock formation, sunlight was a bit better.

This photo isn't really a good representation of the suspension flex, but I was on the limit strap, and into the fender. The shocks were basically bottomed out in the rear. I could get a bit more flex out of it, but this photo makes it look like less than it actually was. Either way, cool photo.

Approaching Reno again, love this shot.

Awesome pics as always Colby, it's almost like you're some kind of photographer / artist type  .............:D :waytogo:

I can't remember, what gears did you have in the green truck? Just curious :D

Truck looks sweet! Pic`s are Awesome.

owenst7`s girl friends dog look like a GSP is that what it is? That is what we got. Best dog ever! " for us anyway" Don`t get me wrong I like labs too. Just that our first dog "MAX" was a GSP that we had for 14 years,, and now we got "BUCK" he is all just to cool.

Don't know what sort of dog that is. I guess she got it from an adoption, so don't know how much she knows about its history.

Looks like a fun trip! Glad things went mostly ok for you! If its a stock style cv, you can clearnce them pretty good amount. Once upon a time a had a truck witg a 6" lift that I couldn't even bolt the driveline back on. After I clearnced it I could flex it out and it was still good.

We've been told by a couple breeders that she's for sure a McNab. We don't have any info on her other than she was about 4 when we picked her up from the working dog rescue out in Battle Mountain and that's also what they said. I sure don't know anything about them, but she definitely has that "sheepdog mentality" lol.

This is her on the left next to one of my Border Collies.

Wish I could make pictures turn out like you do Colby haha.
