'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

Yar. Any that were in Michigan disappeared a LONG time ago.

When you get a chance, go check out the moon rocks if you haven't. There up pyramid highway 445. Nice score on the k5. What brought you to Reno? I just moved back to Washington after spending 3 years in Reno.

Hey don't knock fallon, I ran deliveries for 3 years in northern nevada and fallon was one of my favorites, the people where nice out there. Fallon NAS was an interesting place to go, ran a few deliveries in there. I use to heard stores of people driving south on 95 of Fallon and experiencing low flying jets of the top of their cars.

Also, if you get a chance, take that TBI 350 over Kingsbury or Mount Rose summit and see how well it breathes at that altitude! I took my 89 suburban over Mt Rose and to South Lake Tahoe once and it did not like.
Ya dont knock Fallon I moved back here a few years ago after 8 years in Sacramento. Bought an AR15 my blazer and a foxpro never was able to have this much fun in cali. Plus no smog in Fallon with all the jets they figure whats the use.
Anyway Colbystephens was wondering who you bought that blazer from here doesnt look like any of the normal ones i see around town

For the record: I like Fallon a lot! :D Pretty much anything along HWY 50 is awesome, as far as I'm concerned. ;)

I bought the truck from an older fellow. Nice guy. Glad he didn't own it for very long though, because his buddy that did all the work didn't really know what he was doing. :doah:

I got a trans/auto shop down here and you dont have to tell me everybody likes to take a crack at it 1st. Im pretty sure custom exhaust is top priority around here, seems like no smog equals universal flex pipe and coathangers is the only way to fix a rattling cat. Then there pist when its extra labor to hack out there only welded on the bottom chicken chit splattered everywhere custom exhaust to get the trans out.

YES! That's exactly what my situation was. I looked at his exhaust set up and thought, there's no way in hell you could get that transmission or transfercase out of there without dropping the whole exhaust. And the chicken chit welding surely fit the bill too! :haha:

Been up near the Black Rock Desert for work before, always wanted to go explore up there. It is very desolate there.

My uncle and I used to go Chukar hunting up near High Rock Canyon in the Black Rock in the fall. I also spent a ton of time in the Smoke Creek Desert. If you go exploring either in the summer, you better have plenty of water because you're in a world of hurt if you break down and run out. My last trip out there was in August 2002 and it was 112* and when we left pavement, we didn't see another person for 3 1/2 days.

Took the truck out wheelin last weekend with a local Ck5er and a local 4x4 club. First ride with this truck. Fun times. We went out to El Dorado Canyon, near Carson City, NV. Good challenging trail for a stock truck that you don't want to bash up! :) Looking forward to getting this truck set up like and better than my old '73 tho... :wink1:

Here's a few pics:

33s rub a bit. I was glad I didn't have the chance to remove the 2 extra shocks and the sway bar before I went on the ride. I had intended to do so, and I think I would've ended up chewing up my fenders. The rubbing I got didn't fubar anything, or wrinkle any sheet metal, but you could hear it! :doah:

We got to see a herd of wild horses, which was very cool. Even had a foal. :woot: Only place I've ever seen wild horses is here in NV. Always fun.

Trail's about 14 miles long or so. Would be easy with a slightly lifted truck so you're not always thinking about bashing the rockers. :) Anyway, good times.

Subscribing, as I want to be able to complain when that stupid clean metal gets crunched and then hacked...

I know its gonna be like watching a very depressing horror film. If you hear someone screaming in agony dont worry, its just me lol

That looks like a place I would love to take my truck. AWESOME SCENERY:waytogo:

:wink1: I don't like to hammer on my stuff, so while it'll probably get dinged here and there, it's not going to get hammered. The wheel wells are definitely going to get cut for my 38s though. Hopefully this January. If I can come up with an extra $600 or so of income that I can dedicate to "truck" then I should be able to pull it off.

It is extremely gorgeous. Because of the mid-day photos, the colors aren't real saturated in the photograph, but it is truly stunning. Nevada is a place like no other - gorgeous and mostly not photogenic. :D I think it's the vast emptiness of the place that makes it both of those things.

great pictures man!! really makes me miss wheeling the High Desert

Well, it was a productive weekend on the Blazers. On Saturday I went down to a local CK5er's house and we installed my CB antenna (I forgot to bring the actual CB :doah:), replaced the brake pads, and fixed the previous owner's terrible stereo install.

The CB antenna was a miserable task that took forever. I decided to install it on the rear bumper, at least for now, and flattening a small bit of the bumper was a long, arduous task. I didn't want to beat the thing up, but I couldn't have the antenna sticking off the back of the truck at a 70* angle either. I ended up flatting a portion of it, and then cutting down a large nut to act as shimmed washer to compensate for the remaining angle. It looks really good, but no pics till we have sunlight again tomorrow. :doah:

The previous owner put a cd player/aux. player deck in to the truck, but all he did was remove the old stereo and stick this stereo in the hole. So, it bounced around a lot since it was in a giant opening. He had a universal install kit that would cover up the gap, but didn't install it. That was a bit of a challenge, as I had to take the dremel to open up the plastic hole in the dash a tiny bit so that the "universal" kit would work. Now the stereo looks good, and is properly held into place. :D Again, pics on that tomorrow.

Today I got the CB radio installed, except that I haven't finished running power to it. I did test it out by running a jumper cable from the battery to the positive wire tho. I got all the wiring routed, just need to get it plugged into the fuse box. Should be something I can knock out tomorrow evening in about 10 min or so. Then I need to get it tuned to my antenna... but I don't know how to do that. My radio has a gauge on it, but I don't know what I'm looking at. Pics of that install tomorrow as well.

Also today, NorCalKid came over from California and bought my roll cage, soft top, and rear bumper off of my '73. Cool guy! It was a pretty efficient task to remove the parts, thankfully, with no real major hang ups. :D The vehicle he had most available to bring the cage back to California was hurtin tho! :haha:

So, for the record, you CAN carry a full-size, full-'vert roll cage in a Ford Ranger. :woot: :D :haha:

But, here's the sad pic:

Damn, those full vert Blazers look good in lime green! But, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Next weekend, I install the steering brace! :woot:

QUESTION:

Today my gear selector indicator pin disconnected from the whatever its connected to, and now the pin stays in park when I shift into gear. What's up with that and how can I fix it?

Colby, that one is pretty easy. Usually when that happens its the "string" that broke. Pretty much just gotta pull of the bezel and replace the string with some fishing line or the like.
