'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

I finally got the fender badge on my passenger side fender today. Nice to have both sides matching now. ;)
 
Well, it's been a really long time since I updated this thread. I've been crazy busy with school and work, but I've had a couple opportunities to get out into the desert - though not as much as I'd like.

I've had a few problems come up over the last couple months that I need to get taken care of. I have a new leak I need to find, and I'm suspecting the power steering, because it's under my steering box and I was terribly low on PS fluid last time I checked it. I also found that I was real low on AT fluid a while back, but don't have a leak. :dunno: I topped it off, and it's fine, but it took about a quart and a half, which had me real concerned. I'm typically pretty good about checking that fluid, so it's strange that it got low. I don't seem to have a leak from my trans cooler, but I suppose there's a possibility that the leak I'm seeing under my steering box is related. So, I'll have to investigate.

The one that's got me really stumped is my rear diff. I've got gear oil all over my fuel tank and floor board, but don't see where the leak would be coming from, unless it's coming out of the breather. But, the fluid isn't low, and I'm not sure why it would be burping out of the breather tube.

I finally got around to "fixing" the dentin my driver's door, which is nice. I just finished that this morning. Since it was such a gentle dent, I figured I could stick a soccer ball in there and inflate it to get the dent out. A couple well-placed soccer balls, and I'm back to good-enough, which just a small wrinkle at the trim line.

Here's what the dent looked like to begin with, thankfully having missed the body line. You can also see how it collects dirt:

Ball inside. It turns out that using my cell phone camera screen was the easiest way for me to see inside the door to get stuff in place, FYI, in case anyone else needs to see around tight corners.

Obviously, it still has a bit of a problem at the moulding, but that doesn't really bother me. Someday, when I get ambitious (and funded!) enough to paint the truck to a color that I actually like, I'll pull that dent out, along with the one on the rear driver's quarter panel (which was there when I got the truck.)
 
Check your tcase. Bet you a dollar the input seal is bad and trans fluid is going into it. :waytogo:


We have had 4 tcase a do this in the last year that all had original seals. The seal turns to almost plastic instead of rubber from being so old.
 
Fender looks good.

That could be fluid from the transfer case or transmission on your rear axle housing. That's what mine looks like and I have a leaky front seal for the transfer case. The fluid leaks out while it's sitting still and then runs back there when I start going.

As far as the trans being low on fluid, what trans do you have? My TH400 kept getting low on fluid but it didn't leak anywhere. Turns out that the diaphragm in the vacuum modulator was letting fluid out and it was getting sucked into the intake manifold and burning off.
 
I have a 700r4. I know it's gear fluid on the body, not trans oil.

As to it going between the trans and the t-case - seems reasonable. I know the PO changed out the transmission with a stock replacement about 15,000 miles before I bought it from him. But, based on some of the shoddy work he did, it seems reasonable that he wouldn't have replaced the input seal.... I'll have to see how overfull the tcase is, I guess.
 
Check your diff fluid. Mine liked to puke when it was full of water :eek1:

It also could very well be your leak up front. The wind takes it and blows it underneath and all over.
 
I checked the fluid when I discovered the spray and it looks good as new. It's definitely gear oil, too, and the splatter doesn't extend forward of the rear diff pinion.
 
Is it possible you overfilled the dif? Mine did something similar. I had put in a "little extra" to help compensate for the pinion angle being tipped up more.

No, I filled it till it was barely running out of the fill plug hole, then plugged it up. Now it's a touch below the fill hole.

You have poor taste... :P Kidding. How would I know? I really don't care for the white and blue, and to make matters worse, I really dislike the paint jobs where the colors switch at the body line, and you lose the ability to see the form of the truck like you do if the color goes over the body line - thus the '89-'91 paint jobs are terrible, in my opinion.
 
I like them too, but not in the '89-91 style. The red on grey, or blue on grey is my favorite.

Im with Deuling. Check your t-case fluid level. Its probably over full. As for the rear diff, i have seen that happen (and Larry just had an experience with it) with the rear diff overheating and puking it out like that when its over filled from the get go.

Here is kinda a cool vid that shows the motions the fluid goes through as you are gonig down the road. So its easily conceivable for pressure (from heat) to build inside and as fluid is "pouring" over the vent hole, for some of it go get pushed out.

EDIT: Whats really scary about these videos is how it clearly shows the carier bearings getting starved for oil at high speeds...

Im considering switching to a "creeper breather" style like this.

Right - I just mean that the guy would've replaced the transmission and not done a thing to make sure the tcase was ready to go back in.

Cool vids. The creeper breather is something I'd like to use too. :) How about a condom and a hose clamp? :ears:
 
How does that creeper breather handle going under water?
 
it doesn't allow air in or out, and so you theoretically couldn't flood your diff or whatever in deep water crossings. Also eliminates the hose, which can break if it's caught on a branch or whatever. It's also great for cool points.
 
Cool. So where do I get two? Any recommendations? I need to replace my hoses anyways.
