'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

Got the cap back out of our test fit box today and the chamferred edge that is inside your box isn't in ours.

I plan to pull the box off an '89 suburban and check to see if that one has the same chamfer on it. Hopefully it does, then we can mod the program for the next run of parts.

The ones we have on the shelf now, we'll run back through them and put a quick chamfer on them so they'll be right for everybody.

Thanks for the heads up on the issue colby. Appreciate that! Was good talking to ya again.

No problem. Turned out to be a super easy fix, so no biggie. Just killed a few O-Rings in the process before we figured it out. :D

I haven't put my stock cap in the mail to you yet. If your '89 doesn't have the chamfer, let me know and I'll send that cap over to you. I can't seem to find the information on the year that the input shaft diameter changed on the steering boxes. I'll bet your '89 is just like my '90.

Teck - that does look like a good location. Now I just gotta get a 5.3 installed! :D Actually, I'm pretty sure that your PS/Alternator bracket is just like the one on my TBI350 - or extremely similar, anyway. I'll have to see what I can come up with.

Kurt-
One thing we realized was that with that chamfer, it's way easier to place the o-ring inside the box and press the cap in to the o-ring. Saves you from getting the cap sideways while pressing it in, and it keeps you from damaging the oring as easily.

The box on my '76 (with the older diam. input shaft) also has that chamfer. Who knows what went on at Saginaw in those days lol.

Colby, I think the o-ring is a 236, not 246.

Kurt, Colby and I were talking about how we totally would have paid a few extra bucks to get an o-ring or two with the caps when we bought them from you . They're kind of a pain in the ass to find on a Sunday lol.

Colby, I we drilled your pump fitting out to 5/32". Don't forget to finish welding those tabs on! I did a pretty light bead on there so you could go over it easily.

Yes, they're a 236 O ring. Good catch. I just went back and fixed the typo in my How To thread.

Well, the body lift install didn't go without a flaw. :doah:

I didn't think about the bottom of the fan shroud being a problem, and when I was on the highway my fan got stuck in the fan shroud. The truck nearly overheated, and somehow ATF leaked out and was blown all over the undercarriage. I believed it to be coming from the gear selector shaft seal, so today Owenst7 and I changed that out on my transmission. So, the transmission got a fluid change, which is good if in fact I did overheat the oil. I'd sure like to install a trans fluid temp gauge...

I took the bottom of the fan shroud off for now, until I decide what to do about that.

When I installed the body lift, I used grade 5 bolts and where nuts were necessary, I used stover nuts so that they couldn't rattle free. Well, when installing the driver's rear body mount, I stripped the bolt with the stover nut b/c I was using an impact gun. :doah: So I cut that bolt out today and put a replacement in.

I also put in my steering stops today as a back up in case the ram fails. I couldn't reuse the existing ones from before my hydro assist install because the PO of the axle welded the lock nut to the shank of the bolt. So, I had pulled them out and bought replacements but didn't have the chance to install them till today.

So, my list of truck-related-to-dos to prepare for next week's Rubicon trip is getting pretty small! :woot:

1. I need to go through the truck and check that all the bolts are properly torqued.
2. I need to remove the plastic cover from the latch handle on the back seat so that I can get my tool box to bolt a couple inches forward in the bed of the truck. This will allow me to put my spare tire in the bed, upright, between the tailgate and the tool box. Last year I didn't worry about bringing a spare because we were 9 trucks, iirc, 3 of which shared the same size tire and Chevy 8-bolt pattern. This year we're just 2 Blazers, and though we do share the same size tires and lug pattern, I don't want to us not each having a spare on the trail. Sure would be nice to have a spare tire carrier....

Here's "alexsdad" and I on the Rubicon last year.

You will need to lower you can shourd to keep it from overheating. I did mine when it had a 3" body lift by cut short pieces of flat steel.

My 1990 K5 has NO shroud at all, and it never overheats. I am not saying you shouldn't run a shroud, do so if you can, but saying it will definitely over heat is just not true.

I'm getting super excited, and it's too early for that because I still have several days before we leave. :doah: I took the plastic cover off of the latch handle of my rear seat today so that I could move my tool box a couple inches forward. I then bolted the box down, and conveniently the front 2 of 4 bolts were able to go through the floor supports. Now my spare tire can be strapped down in the cargo area of my truck, which makes me feel a lot more secure for our backcountry trips.

I also got the organization of my tool box all taken care of, so that my cooler will fit in there snugly, but it will still be accessible.

My only to-dos left are:
  • Pack my Hi-Lift
  • Pack my cooler & camp gear
  • Pack my tarp just in case the weather changes.
  • Get a quart of ATF
  • Build a platform to go over the transmission tunnel in the back seat in which I can store a drink cooler. This will double as a means to allowing my dog to sit facing forward so that my back 2 passengers won't get frustrated with her trying to curl up in the small space between them.

So, it's a pretty short list. :woot:

Of the Rubicon? Of course. :D As if I didn't take enough last time at roughly 750... :doah: :haha:

We're going to be 3 rigs - two Blazers and a Jeep. We're taking a day to do some on-foot exploring on Wednesday + swimming + etc. Should be fun!!

Don't miss the waterfall at Buck Island. Also, there's a rope swing at the springs that is bitchin if the water is warm enough. It's about halfway upstream to the cabin from Dirty Dozen, on the far side of the river. There's a nice picnic area in the trees at the bottom of the slab nearby.

You can borrow my canoe if you'd like.

I forgot about the rope swing g at Rubicon Springs. Well have to stop for that on Thursday. Canoe would be fun, but I'm going topless, and have a full rig of people/dog/gear. ;) thanks for the offer, tho.

Keep an eye out for a group of Albertan Jeepers which are going to be hitting the trail next week about the same time as you guys will be :waytogo: Look for the Alberta license plates and ABJK stickers on the side :D

Will do! I was just commenting to Claire this morning how I'll be wishing you were riding with us.

They won't happen to be carrying a 5.3L/4L60E, will they? :wink1:

Unfortunately not, just a whole lotta 3.8L V6s :haha: And trust me, I wish more than you guys that I was going with ya'll! If I had some fore-warning I'd have come down this week to play, I originally had the whole next week booked off for vacation and would definitely have come :waytogo:

I ended up seeing these guys today and chatted with them very briefly at Little Sluice (that's the place where we stopped for lunch on day one and you used paracord to hold your hub lock out in place.) :D
