'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

Well, I got almost nothing accomplished tonight. Kinda frustrating. But that's OK. I installed the intake, but I think I did it incorrectly, so I'm going to do it again. Details/questions to follow tomorrow morning. For now, it looks pretty!

Looks bitchin. What are your smog requirements up there?

I'd be nervous custom painting a stock motor for smog questions. Hell, i painted my non-ca intake black and tried to make it look old to pass :haha:

They just open the hood, attach a tach to the spark plug wires, input the VIN, check for a cat, and put a sniffer in the tail pipe. No biggie. I'll bring the receipt for my 5.7L just in case.

Some techs get nervous when they see something not stock. I had a tech twenty years ago who refuse to smog my blazer for having a performer WITH EGR, because it wasn't factory. Ederbrock never made a CARB sticker because they marketed it as factory replacement. I took the blazer to another shop and they didn't have problem with the manifold.

Tests here are done at government facilities, not private shops. Guess I'll see how it goes!

Today I got the engine installed into the truck, my new poly transmission mount installed, and everything securely bolted into place. Now I just need to plumb and wire it up. :woot:

The engine turned out looking pretty cool.

It makes the rest of the truck look pretty bland. Hope to resolve that in the not-so-distant future.

And to double-up my posts on this particular topic (I have a thread about this in the Garage), you do use the metal bracket that comes with the Energy Suspension poly transmission mount.

It goes on top of the poly block, between the mount and the transmission. It didn't appear to fit when I first put it in there, so it made me wonder if it was applicable to my application. But I believe it distributes the load over the whole poly block, and also adds some tension into the bolt system (like a lock washer), since you have to use the bolt to suck up the space between the bracket and the mount.

Finally, I am SO happy with my new DIY4x poly engine mounts. My old rubber clam-shells were totally shot. I think Darren recommended that I replace my engine mounts while I'm in there, and I'm so glad I took him at his word. It would've been pretty frustrating to pull these busted mounts out of my truck and to then have to wait on an order to get some replacement poly engine and transmission mounts. My engine must've been flopping around on that frame like nobody's business. In fact, it killed my 1.5 year old rubber transmission mount (even though I haven't hardly driven my truck in the last year and a half...) Which made me doubly-glad to have ordered up new poly mounts for both trans and engine.

My frame sure is dusty!

Looking good.

I love the difference between western states and the rest of the country.
West coast= Dusty frame
Rest of the world= Rusty Frame

Got the new engine running today! :woot: Didn't bring it home because I need a trip permit and whatnot first. I still have a laundry list of odd-and-ends that need to be wrapped up too. But it moves under its own power!

Not an interesting video, but.... Here's a videoclip of the engine running.

One of the big things that needs to be sorted out quickly is the fan shroud situation. The engine was running really hot as it sat there and idled in the 100* weather today. Or I need to set up a sweet electric fan situation (preferred, but probably not feasible immediately).

Colby, you could easily fit the dual electric fans from a 94-96 Impala on your radiator and it WILL keep it cool.

Good to see this build moving along again. Looks great man and I second the Windstar fans.

Yeah, I am glad you got it repowered, I love looking at your pictures of when you take this thing off road.

Thanks guys! I'm excited to get out and into the backcountry again.

As to the fan: I have a date with the Pick-n-Pull tomorrow afternoon. Local place tells me it has 10 95-98 Windstar vans on the lot. All my mechanics tools are an hour away, so hopefully my tiny collection of sockets and other hand tools in my work bag will be sufficient.

I'm looking at this Painless Wiring kit, and $81 seems pretty steep. I'm going to see if I can piece it together for cheaper. I think. I like the convenience of just buying a kit though. It doesn't have a dual circuit, but my A/C isn't working these days anyway. And I don't see it working in the near future either. I expect that when I do fix it, switching to a dual circuit won't be too big of a challenge. Thoughts?

Well, it looks like the thermal switch is what drives that cost. I probably can't beat it by much if I were to piece it together. So I'm leaning towards just buying the kit.
