'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

as an aside.. all the 25/40 and 10/30 mercruiser oil we run in the boats has plenty of ZDDP.... great oil...

Funny to watch this post come full circle.

Sounds like the stock replacement still is the way to go for YOU. Haha.

I've been buying the Vr1 scott recommended off Amazon prime.

Scott, you really only advised it for break in and first oil change? Its all i've been running. :haha:

If i can go back to conventional, great. Otherwise, its still not that expensive.

I've been saying stock replacement the entire time.

I just mentioned that if he could find an LO5 car replacement engine with a roller cam, it would be better.

You guy act like changing the torque value on an intake bolt will cause a TBI engine to not run right. You can't go throwing a monster cam in there, and expect it to work, but they will work just fine with small changes.

Hell I ran mine for a couple of years with an LT4 Hot Cam in it, with a dead stock PROM. Other than the IAC getting confused, it ran just fine.

Yep, only needed for break-in on flat Tappet engines. You can go to just a convention Valvoline if you want.

I followed 4x4high's advise on the oil in my crate 350 in my blazer...

The stock 350 in my blazer just has headers and edelbrock intake and it moves the rig pretty well, even up 80 in the hills with a trailer on 37's...

Well, here's a little update.

We moved to the Portland, Oregon area in February. It's taken us longer to get on our feet than I'd hoped, but everything is working out fine. As a result, I spent the money I thought I had for the truck on living. But, I just got hired as an assistant project manager for a home builder and he really wants me to have a truck. So the company is going to buy me a new engine for the truck. :woot:

After work today I am going to go down to the most amazing auto parts store in the world (Clackamas Auto Parts), and get an initial estimate on the crate engine + all the parts I'll need.

1: Putting a 30' ladder + lumber on top of a Jetta is pretty great.
2: Seeing people admire my 50 MPG work truck at Home Depot is entertaining.
3: Using my truck for these things will be so much better.
4: I CAN'T WAIT to get back out onto some backcountry roads and trails with the Nevada Blazer. :woot:

Hey Mitch!! Remind me what the story is on your buddy's engine hoist. I'm going to need to borrow or rent one.

So you are saying "life" happened. :haha::haha: Funny how that works. Glad to see the blazer getting some love again, and I look forward to all the cool pictures you will take on the new adventures.

Have you had any new art projects lately?

Welcome to Oregon. Good to have another Chevy guy around. Let me know when you are ready to explore some trails around here.

Just a thought but is there any chance/benefit of just having him buy a pickup for you to drive instead of doing the engine in the k5?

I mean getting the truck running is never bad, but for work type work would you not be better off with a $1500 truck with a lumber rack?

Just something to consider. Glad to see you back on the site.

also the "oweing him" type factor, etc... buy me a work truck, I'll fix mine on my own dime is my opinion..

either way, good to see ya round bud, missed ya....

Hey dude! I'll ask him. I would imagine you could borrow it but he might want a deposit.

Thanks!

Cool!

I considered this. But I don't want a 3rd vehicle to insure, park, maintain, etc.

This isn't a factor here. I am actually paying him back. In exchange for the upfront purchase of the parts, I'm not charging the business the $0.575/mile till the equivalent is paid off. So, if the swap costs $2000, then I won't start charging $0.575/mile for my work-time driving till I've driven 3479 miles on the job.

Was just up in Portland for 3 weeks for the birth of our daughter that we adopted.

Growing up near Seattle, I have passed through Portland countless times, but never spent time there.

I learned in those 3 weeks that it is quite possibly the weirdest, or quirkiest city I have ever seen. Pretty cool, just.....quirky ha ha ha.

Also I learned that the restaurant "Fire on the Mountain" is Amazing.
