Supposed to be portal boxes. Not sure if those still use a normal steering knuckle or if the knuckle is integrated into the portal box.

Original plan was to use Dana 80s front and rear with portal boxes but obviously he is starting with some normal tons. Maybe there wasn't an easy way to run the portal boxes on Dana 80s? Think it would be even cooler on a set of axles that weren't so common nowadays but I digress. Either way it is going to be nuts with portal boxes and 46s

Forgot about the portals, that makes sense. I agree that the 80's would have been cool but the portals with 46's will have gobbs of clearance.

Yeah, the portal boxes are good for 5" more ground clearance so on 46s it will be the equivalent of being on 56s. Would have been even crazier if he was starting with some 54s, but i guess you have to draw the line somewhere. 46s on portals will be quite impressive, most people stick to 40s on portals
 
I vote for rockwells. Since he is running 46's and I imagine it's going to be a little taller than normal since he is building an "end of days" truck and not solely focused on rock crawling....that would be sweet under that burb. He will be tall enough to clear the center chunk in the front (my bro is on rockwells with ~7" of lift total and it clears just fine with 44's), RuffStuff makes a swap kit for them with leafs, and there is good aftermarket support. Would be sick....but I imagine he already has a plan in place

I am sure he is going to go all chromo with CTMs or Superjoints or maybe RCV if possible. Should be plenty strong. I have seen some SICK rockwell buggies though

So, not only is this going to be a 12v Cummins equipped rig on portal boxes and 46s but Ian dropped a major bomb on me the other day, it's not going to be 4x4
 
He posted earlier on IG that it'll be getting a Cummins. Be interesting to see the build on tv

Well, it's not a rock crawler, it's an end of the world survival vehicle. While I don't normally care for the 6x6 look, it does mean you have 1/3 more traction and if one tire were to fail in the rear you can keep on going until it is convenient and safe to stop.

What is going to be interesting is how he packages two 46" diameter tires next to each other in the rear. He is either going to have to cut into the rear doors or do a comp cut rear quarter panel and push one of the axles way back.

Again, my personal taste would be to not do the 6x6 but I do see the advantages and wow factor. After all, you have to admit you have never seen a 6x6 square body on portal boxes and 46s before. It is definitely going to be unique and stand out.
 
Well I still can't remember how the hell I was embedding the Instagram photos on here before so here is a link. Tear down of the Burb is in full swing. I am supposed to be picking up pull out parts tomorrow. Ian has the new axles w/ portal boxes, engine, & now transmission so things will be progressing quickly from here on out.

meh...portals and 6x6...he needs to call it something else, like homemade deuce and a half...end of the world vehicle? I'd take my 'sub over that expensive mess.
 
I dunno, I'm pretty sure I'd wheel the $hit of this rig and enjoy every minute of it.

Well, I knew that when he changed directions and went from a Big Foot Hunting Vehicle to an End of Days Vehicle that he was going to get some push back from the true survival people. He was right on target for the original mark. But, honestly, who wants to see a mostly stock Suburban get a very mild bare bones survival build? That would be pretty boring if you ask me, even if it would be more practical . . .
 
The name of the show is extreme 4x4.
Not " mildly built camping 4x4"
He has to do $hit that makes people tune in. Which is hard completing with stupid shows like ass monkeys. Who cares what he builds. Most of these just get parted out or sit at the studios collecting dust. Just enjoy it for the entertainment value it is.
 
That 6X6 the dude is building on Pirate is pretty badass.

He oughta get another Suburban , cut the back off one ; the front off the other , join them together w/ a hinged frame like a gamma goat and make a8x8.(too much time on my hands)
