91 K5 -Procrastination Build - bikini top!

I thought you had TBI?

Martin

I did have a used throttle body but that's all. I was exploring how much it would cost to make a complete system but it was just too much considering all the other things that need to be completed on the truck. I was able to have the carb professionally built to my engine specs for a 1/3 of the cost so it'll do for now.

7 years ago I bought a soft top here, I finally opened the box and installed it today. :rotfl:

Fits like a glove, I'll try to pull it outside tomorrow for better pics.

I love that blaze!!! I also like it on the welds, it looked a little narrow before..

Thanks Larry, I like the Welds better too. They aren't as hip as the H1's but they sure do look better. :pimp:

I tried to fix the steering today and figured out the difference us in the new steering arms. The arms have less inward bend so the drag link has to reach further to the right throwing everything off. I've got a TRE on order for tomorrow that should fix it but the taper is different so I'll be sending the arms to Kert sooner than I planned to be welded up & redrilled.

You could always use stauns if you still wanted a beadlock. They make them for 16.5s

That's the plan, either Stauns or Inner Air Locks at some point. Lots more money to spend of other stuff first. :doah:

All of my updates at the moment are works in progress.

* both steering arms are at Diy4x to be welded up & redrilled
* I wanted to go with histeer when the arms are finished but I found out it's not as simple as cutting / tapping the tie rod tube. I'll probably be ordering a shorter tube next month. The reason for change is my ORD 1.5" tie rod hits my rock ring and thick cover so moving it for clearance.
* the new carb is on and runs good. The electric choke is so nice!
* ordered a new mini starter (mine drags horribly)
* finally got the last of the under hood wiring cleaned up and covered. It's not show quality but much better.
* new battery and winch cables (part of wiring clean up). It was nice to see the 8274 that's been sitting up for 12 years (part of that outside in the weather) works like a champ.

I wanted to go to the Blazer Bath event next month but I still need a front driveshaft and my trailer needs tires and new deck boards ($$$$!). I doubt I'll make it.

This is certainly probably my favorite build on here. Overkill is underrated is my first thought every time I see it. Love it.

I almost did the Jana 76, but found a great deal on a HP 60 instead and went that route, but I wish either you lived closer, or I did, and that we both had ours finished, because I would love to see this in action. And then roll mine over or something.

LOL! Thanks a lot buddy. Like you I'm ready to wheel it, it's been way to long coming.

You're right we are too far apart but there's always opportunities for change. Did I mention it snows a crap-ton up there and I'm less than an hour from the beach. :D

I've probably said it before but I doubt I'd do the J76 on another housing. There's a ton of grinding and such required that make me question the housing strength.

I am machining my doubler plate, adding gears all around again and doing assist and I am done, I have been doing and redoing it for 10 years, I am ready to roll it over or atleast do something other than hold jackstands down with it for a few years. Maybe when I am retired in 40 years ours will be done and we can do it, lol

?... I have been doing and redoing it for 10 years...

Man I know exactly what you're talking about. This one has been sitting for about the same amount of time, partially because we had kids and got busy but I wasted a lot of time trying to collect my ideal parts list. At this point, I really like the truck but I wish I had bought a running truck and done this build in small steps keeping it running the whole time.

Agreed. This is exactly what I did. I bought a running rig with a 4" lift, 1-tons, and 37's. And everytime I save up some cash, I would purchase a part or two an put them on over a weekend. The only time my rig was down for an extented amount of time was my TBI motor swap. But it was only really down for 5 months or so (maybe less). Nothing wrong with trying to build your dream truck at once, but anyone else reading this, this is pretty good advise to always be able to have fun with your truck while building it.

nvrenuf, I will say though, I have always loved this rig. Keep at it :waytogo:....and if you ever want to get rid of the 43's....you call me first!!

Correct, they are much less fun when they are down for long periods of time.

This time, a simple paint job, mind you zero rust repair, turned into a doubler, hp 60, new gears, completely tearing out my cooling fan wiring and doing it better, relays for windows because that got old, basically the modification treadmill.

John. Sounds like you are getting real close to actually playing instead of working on the k5. Just dropping in to check on your progress. Keep up the hard work. And if you decide to do the blazer bath next year, I might be up for that. My trucks not perfect but could be trail ready in a short weekend.

Hey! How've you been?

Yeah it's getting kinda close. In fact I got my steering arms back today as well as a new mini starter. I probably won't touch it until Saturday but I'll make some more progress and hopefully have it drivable again.

Next step, modified cross members and a front driveshaft.
