91 K5 -Procrastination Build - bikini top!

Sweet, now we just need to find a place to get together that's not packed. LOL

I live in Gulfport and have never been to a scrappin' the coast. I do go to cruising the coast every year though.

John, to keep the body from sagging, could you just get 2 4x4's the length of the rockers, hold them up with jackstands, and put the weight of the body on the 4x4's? I'm sure once you lop off the top you won't be moving it until it's all done, right? :dunno:

That's a good idea with the 4x4's. I will be moving it after chopping the roof. A friend that builds show cars is going to do the cutting / welding so I have to go to his place. Once the new windshield frame is welded on I'll have to drive it home.

Thats the picture I was looking for.

The issue I have is, if you need to block off the door opening with a brace, how do I get in and out of the truck.

I don't see how a temporary brace would help at all in this instance.

Climb into the back :dunno:

Y'all are getting too serious with this. I took out the windshield, grabbed my sawzall and got after it! I had brand new ORD body bushings and a 1" body lift. I cut off my existing cab top at the bedsides and then the windshield. Of course taking the windshield opening measurement twice! I then fitted the upper donor windshield frame by slicing of small pieces until it fit perfect. I then took a piece of metal bar and rammed down the original frame and used holes in the other as a place to weld to the bar inside. I found my old pics under "The Garage" section. 1984 k5 chop top. I just commented on it. This may be of some help for y'all!

I was assuming you would take the doors off to do the top chop, then do a cage after the top is cut off to stiffen it up.

The reason I'm so concerned with this is I've read more than once about body sag (front o back and side to side) after cutting the roof off. I intend to tie the cage to the body so I don't want it permanently out of shape. :dunno:

can he/ you do the work on a trailer, then the bracing wouldn't have to be moved, not ideal but an idea.

He shop is behind his house, not sure if I can snake the trailer back there and inside the shop.

Tempting.... I've seen that one on CL for a while I just haven't wanted to drive the 110 miles to go get it (especially since it got s busted corner).

Yea, it's about 50 miles from me. I've seen it a couple of times, but I don't normally cruise craigslist for hard tops.

That busted corner will make it leak like a mo fo. I'd stay away. I'm missing one little piece of rubber in the seal and there is always a puddle on my floor plan when it rains.

I'm really wanting a soft top but $950 is a painful number. :doah::eek1:

No carpet, no top.

But when it rains, you will wish you had kept the half cab
