91 Suburban V2500 - Tow/Weekend Rig - Build Thread

Are you running the quad shocks in the front or just one on each corner? I think the 170 valving is for the quad set-up. You could try adding the additional shock just to see what it rides like.

Did the 3/4 ton burb's have this option?

I only have single front shock mounts, and am running the proper single configuration shock.

Yes, 3/4 tons did have the quad shock option - I have one.
Looking at the Bilstein catalog, they show a 5125 series rear with the same part number as yours (33-185569), but with 255/70 valving
Front 5125's look like 33-185590 may work for you. Same collapsed and extended length with the 255/70 valving.
Look up the catalog online for all the data.

Where are you finding the catalog with the valving? I can't seem to find it.

Justin at 4WP was suggesting going to the 5125's with the higher valving....but Bilstein doesnt' seem to think that will fix my issue.

Can you link me to a page or PDF?

This is all very interesting. I had long desired the 5100's for my burb. Maybe i dont? Coarse, mine also has the quad shock setup.

For an on-road truck, i did too...but now know that wasn't right.

I forget, is yours still stock height?

The 4600 HD ones i had dominated. Good and firm, kept body roll down, and soaked up the big bumps.

Yea mine is stock again. I had it lifted for a couple years before i finally realized it was a dumb idea to have that truck lifted when i wanted to keep it a nice street truck!

This definitely changes my shock plans also. Of course I've got procomp 4" front springs so maybe the the soft 5100s will be ok under my sub. I'll be keeping track of your work.

have you thought about going to a superduty front shock mount? never seen anyone do it on a stock ride height if i remember you can run a longer shock

im real curious to see how you get it figured out. your burb is similar to what im hoping for with mine. im thinking of running a 2.5 lift due to how saggy my 1/2ton springs are. i dont want to go big but atleast want to be able to run more than a 31

Do you have the part numbers for the front ones?

The part number I have is:
F4 BE5 E655HO

If anyone is interested. I felt they were too stiff really for my needs.

Also, if you guys want to know, the upper quad mount on my Suburban is being used with the 12" travel, short body 7100's. If you happen to have that mount, you might be able to skip doing the Super Duty mounting option.

THanks for checking . That is the old part number for the 5100 fronts i have in my possession. Apparently my "too soft" is your " too stiff" :haha:

To each his own.

Ok, so the K30 application of the 4600 shock is longer in the rear, and slightly stiffer than the 4600 rear i had before. Almost the same length as the lifted 5100 application for my truck. In the front, i'm screwed. All longer applications are too soft.

Going to try this K30 rear 4600 with the 4" lift 5100's in the front, and see if a stiffer rear shock helps with my excessive body roll. If that doesnt' work, i may be back to a 4600 front, but really, thats only 1" of suspension drop in my configuration . Its a miracle that i didn't break the ones i ran for 2 yrs.

For the front, have you thought about doing the after market quad shock setup? It just uses two sets of stock front shocks. Maybe you can get what you want that way?

I would if i could find a valving configuration I knew i liked. The issue i see is that i'd be adding a dual shock hoop to mount 2 shocks with incorrect valving, instead of just 1. Kinda a shot in the dark. If i need to get into custom valving, I'll get one that is correct rather than 2.

Edit: Although, if i can find a 2nd set of 5100's to try from someone on here, I may look at trying out a dual setup.

And the saga continues. That rear ak2043 shock is back ordered. Haven't heard back from bilstein when it may be available.

Sounds about right :D

I know it can be frustrating finding the setup you like. I'll admit that my 7100 setup with the Tuff Country H.D. springs up front is a little on the soft/ bouncy side for the street, but it soaks up washboard road like it's not even there. Which, for the off-roading I'm doing, is what I encounter more often than not. Helps keep the wife happy :thumb:

I flog this damn thing on the street. Drive it like you stole it, right?

It sees a lot of 70-80mph freeway driving, a good amount of mountain roads, etc.

Thinking about this more.

What happens, valving / feel wise, when you go to 2 shocks? Does it behave like the sum of the valving of the 2 shocks? Considering picking up Clay's Front 5100's and trying to run them as duals with the 5100 front's ive got (Same shocks).

Options out there seem to be dual 5100's, liking the 5100's single, 4600's that are too short, upgrade to valveable shock, or try some other MFG's.....

OK, so this thread it turning into an internal monologue.

Spent some time on the phone with 4wp, and planning to try another line of shock. Bilstein just doesn't' have the valving i need in an off-the-shelf shock. Not interested cost wise in a custom shock, and really don't' need to get into trial and error of duals, etc.

Ordering up a set of Rancho RS9000XL adjustables, and going to see what happens. Yes, they are not the best shock in the world. But, if the adjustability allows me to end up running a stiffer shock on the street, it may be what i need. Should have them in hand Friday, and will have a full report after this weekend.

cool, youre right, not the best but probably fine for your application. as badly as i want nice smooth, shiny custom FOAs, Foxs, etc. im sure my suburban will end up with an off the shelf shock on it.

If you are looking for a smooth, off road ride, and can deal with loads of body sway on the road, the 5100's woudl probably be good. And really, they go for about $440 a set....not bad.

You 100% get what you pay for in shocks....
